Review by cynthia28 -- Containment Breach by Wm. A. Yandell
Containment Breach, a novel by Wm. A. Yandell, opens with a mission to destroy the Creatures from some military group and a team of bioengineering scientists. The Creatures made by Demetrius Zayack have escaped and started to kill humans on Earth. This novel was told from the perspective of the main character, one of the scientists.
Dr. Walter Smithton is a bioengineering scientist. He has a secret experiment and created a new life of his own creature named Zayans, after a sudden disappearance of his role model, Zayack. Together with other three scientists: Jack, Marcie, and Steve, they were forced to be on a space for a mission lead by Bush, the Director Security Division in the World Alliance forces without a clear explanation. Besides the military, the government also sends official mind readers to investigate. When going up to space, many things not work as planned. Dr. Smithton also feels something fishy in this project. Can they save the Earth from the Creatures? Will Dr. Smithton discover the real enemy in this mission?
What I like the most is the author successfully kept the tension all through the book. Yandell executes it perfectly which keeps readers engaged to every page of the book. Fear and suspense rise perfectly and at the same time, he can make the readers curious about what was going on and what was the purpose. Besides keeping the tension, he can also create climax in the story, and that is a great ability which is not every author can do.
The format of the book is the only issue I disliked. There is no chapter in the book. I don’t get used to reading books without chapters. I find chapters are a way to pause or to take a step back during a heightened tension where we’re going to next, and also the best way to leap the reader into the next part of the story. I feel there is no breathing room in a book without chapters. A chapter in the book can let the reader disconnect from the book for a moment and process the information before coming back and continuing.
There are only unimportant errors in grammar in the novel. The rest is professionally well-edited. The dialogue in the novel seems natural, the writing is easy to read, the characters are brilliantly developed. The author also makes the readers imagine what are the Creatures or Zayans look like. Therefore, I will give this novel 4 out of 4 stars. This is a great fiction book. I will recommend this book to sci-fi lovers, adventure, and fantasy readers. Young adults can still appropriate to read this book since there are only a few minor profanities and no sexual content.
