Review by khaulah -- Containment Breach by Wm. A. Yandell
It has been ten years since the disappearance of Demetrius Zayack, a prominent scientist in the field of bioengineering, which deals with life form building and development. Walter Smithton, also a bioengineering scientist and a close follower of Zayack, creates life-forms that he calls, “Zayans” similar to the beings created by Zayack. Smithton constantly lives in fear of the discovery of Zayans and keeps their existence a secret. Following the visit of a government mind reader to the research facility, Smithton’s secretary goes missing. Smithton and his three fellow scientists are recruited to a space station without any explanation.
Containment Breach is a tense and captivating read. The first few pages tease the appearance of “creatures” of Zayack killing crew members in the space station. This brief sequence is written in such an engaging manner that it captured my attention right away. WM. A. Yandell creates an atmosphere of terror and suspense in the face of fast, strong, and intelligent creatures. The reader feels hopeless, lost, and frightened not only from the danger of creatures but also from the potential of the cruelty of human beings.
While the characters are trying to find a way out of the challenging situation, a sense of urgency and interest is created in the reader. I couldn’t turn the pages of the book in certain parts out of fear of what will happen, but the suspense is so intense that I could not stop reading.
The plot is compelling, and the characters are well written. Smithton, as the main character is interesting. He is pragmatic and level-headed in stressful situations. The supporting characters do not disappoint either. Dialogues flow easily and sound authentic to each character.
The book is not divided into chapters but organized as divisions. The explanation of the science of what is going on is simple and clear, and doesn’t distract or bore the reader at any point.
Overall, Containment Breach is a good complex of dangerous antagonists and enclosed space, similar to the plots of many books and movies but different enough to warrant a read. I would rate 4 out of 4 stars for this sci-fi dystopia. I found a few grammatical errors, but they do not take away from the reading experience. There are minimal instances of swearing and no sexually explicit scenes. Trigger warnings include the depiction of violent deaths.
It is a must-read for all the fans of science fiction or anyone who is looking for a good book to read.
