[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Well of Bones" by Chase Walker.]
Darkness and evil reside in the well. One drop of blood and the evil is unleashed. Well of Bones by Chase Walker takes the reader on a fantasy journey of man fighting evil. Jake Zimmar and Bromley (Brom) Grute were childhood friends. Jake came from money which kept him from being drafted into the military. His voluntary enlistment in the military allowed him to stay away from the front fighting lines. However, Brom was drafted and was expected to be on the front lines. Jake vowed to stay with his friend, Brom, through thick and thin. When he saved Count Varro of the Knights of Apollo during battle, he was asked to join the Knights. He refused unless Brom could go too.
The main characters of the book were the members of the Knights of Apollo. However, Jake was my favorite. He always showed strength and character. He also showed some of his vulnerabilities, especially when he was around the voices that he heard in the well. He always put his friend, Brom, first. Throughout the book he demonstrated the strength of their friendship.
This is the first book in a three-part series. The book was enjoyable as a standalone book, but the last chapter describing the fighting chimeras made you realize that there was much more to come. I am looking forward to reading the next book. Obviously, there is much more to the story of the well, even though the book left the island where the well was located and moved to other wars. I think this book would have been even better if there were more descriptions of the creatures born from the well.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The book appears to be professionally edited since there were only a few spelling and punctuation errors. These errors did not take away from the story. I took one star away because the book started out focusing on the well and the evil in the well but seemed to have lost focus. There were many scenes of fighting evil and the creatures that were born from the well, however most of the book was spent on military maneuvers and war. Regardless, the book was very fast-paced and kept my attention.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy, monsters, and chimera creatures. This book is also great for those who enjoy reading descriptions of war maneuvers and about the blood and gore of war. The book is appropriate for adults. Younger readers may enjoy the book; however, they should be aware there are many descriptions of fight scenes and injuries with very graphic detail that may be inappropriate for younger readers.
