Review by Twylla -- Homecoming by Jude Austin
Kalin Taylor, aka Project Kata, and Project Tau have just escaped from GenTech. Kalin destroyed the entire lab and killed 2,470 people in his wake. Kalin and Tau were routinely tortured and abused by the scientists at GenTech, and now they are on the run. Kalin wants to go home to Trandellia. Tau just doesn't want to go back to GenTech. Kalin has a plan for reversing his death certificate, reclaiming his citizenship in Trandellia and sponsoring Project Tau so Tau can live in Trandellia with him, but those things are easier said than done. Homecoming by Jude Austin is the second installment in the Project Tau series. Homecoming picks up where Project Tau ends.
My favorite thing about this sequel is seeing how Kalin copes with his new reality as a genetically modified human. Emotions boil over as he deals with the trauma that was imposed on him for the last two years, as well as his unresolved childhood traumas. Everyone he has ever trusted has betrayed him. He feels trapped in the roles of fugitive, possession, and killer. He escapes one situation only to be trapped in another one just as bad. Will Kalin Taylor ever find peace in his new reality?
This very unique science fiction story demonstrates the importance of developing a global, ethical, unambiguous framework around the evolution of human cloning. Throughout the story, the laws determined how Project Tau was treated. He was considered livestock by the legal system. He had no rights, and he was required to have an owner. Kalin got frustrated by the demeaning, condescending manner in which Tau was treated at the Conclave. "This whole system is wrong." Scientists, educators, and legislators need to ensure that ethics, human dignity and compassion are the main considerations when setting boundaries for human cloning.
The writing style is vivid and intense. I felt like I was there when Project Tau tasted “human food” for the first time. There are so many delightful surprises in this sequel. Other worlds are visited, new species of wildlife are introduced, and the action is non-stop. This book is very well written and professionally edited. I didn't find any errors. I am giving this book an enthusiastic rating of 4 out of 4 stars. If you love a fast-paced, compelling science fiction thriller, this is the series to read. This book is recommended for a mature audience since it contains explicit sexual content and profanity.
