In a futuristic world, so near yet so far; the extraterrestrials are visiting, the government is scheming, and this man, the center of it all… is just trying to get some KFC? Homecoming: The Unari Experiment by Brian Harad is the story of Byron Hollington, your average man with a wife and three kids, enjoying a pretty ordinary life. He’s fairly satisfied with his normalcy you see. He’s had his ups and downs, his struggles and bumps, with only the occasional mysterious event to warrant a conspiracy theory or two. But alas, as with any thriller novel picking its protagonist, this poor man cannot just be left alone. The unthinkable happens, and he is kidnapped by an alien species claiming that he is one of their own!

Bryon, recent abductee, is suddenly introduced into a strange and unfamiliar alien society. He is now named Thundercloud and is told he is of a powerful species by the name of Alicorn. The author does a fantastic job of showing the foreignity of it all, and the alien societal world-building is wondrously unique. These beings have a seemingly bizarre and unexplainable way of thinking. Taught by a fellow Alicorn, Sarraqa, he must learn to adjust and live in this new environment, but this is a great struggle given the outlandishness of it all! Can Thundercloud learn to live as one of them? Or will he be stuck in his human ways and ideals forever?

There are so many great things about this book, but my favorite was how the author managed to integrate subtle lighthearted humour even in the most serious of situations. For example Thundercloud, (Who gets quite irritated at times when the aliens don’t get his mediocre jokes!) has a generally likeable personality, and though he is considerably distressed by everything; he still manages to crack a wise one every now and again, not limited to excessive sarcasm.

I found nothing I truly disliked about this book. Throughout the story, I found only a few spelling errors, but the meaning was otherwise clear. The flow of the story was smooth and with good transitioning. Because of this, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. However, be warned, this book does contain profanity and one instance of a rather violent scene. With that in mind, I would not recommend this book to anyone who is squeamish about that kind of thing.

Homecoming: The Unari Experiment is a thrilling sci-fi filled with wondrous descriptions, mystery of the unknown, and conspiracy all wrapped up in one riveting reading experience. This book is a must-read for any fans of a thrilling adventure novel. There are dozens of unknowns, leaving the reader hanging onto the edge of their seat when everything is all said and done. Hopefully, we will get book two soon!
