Official Review: Steve Tanner and the End of the World
Russian cosmonauts, Vlade and Herge, are on a space shuttle when a weird, pulsating anomaly off in the distance is noticed. They investigate and are pulled through a portal into a different planetary system where beings from another world await. A device is placed into the Earthlings’ ears that translates the aliens’ language, so they can comprehend it. Vlade and Herge learn there are two species on Kanor, the Kanorians and the Drech. The Kanorians, who they are communicating with, are thin and pale, with oversized heads and blue eyes. The Drech are massive creatures that perform the heavy labor for the Kanorians. All Earthlings are invited to visit their planet.
Once Earthlings found out about Kanor and how friendly the aliens were, many of them decided they wanted to visit. Initially, only the wealthiest could afford to go. When these people didn’t return because they liked it so much, more and more shuttles were built. This made it feasible for average people to venture there. However, almost no one returned home after visiting, which gradually lowered the population on Earth.
Steve and Jeff, 13-year-old boys who have been friends all of their lives, have recently decided to travel to Kanor. Steve’s family had previously gone to inspect it and sent a message for him to join them. Jeff’s parents died earlier from an auto accident, and his grandparents grant him permission to go along. They soon gain new friends, including Zixin, a native of China who is very proficient in judo. Unknown to them, their actions will soon affect the fate of the inhabitants of Earth and Kanor.
Steve Tanner and the End of the World is a science-fiction novel written by Dr. A., an elementary school principal. He enjoys instilling a love of literature in his students, and I think they would thoroughly appreciate this 168-page short story. The book was written for students at the fourth-grade level and older, and I think that is the appropriate age. Although adults may enjoy it, it is composed in a manner that can be understood easily by youngsters, without any profanity or sex. With the exception of 24-year-old Zixin, the protagonists are all teenagers.
The author’s imagination and descriptions create an intriguing and easy-to-visualize world. His imagination represents my favorite aspect of the book. The book is fast paced and exciting with a good flow. The prose is credible and comprehendible, with one exception. The author states early on that only two species reside on Kanor. Specifically, there are no animals, birds, or insects. Only a few plants exist, which have been imported from other planets. Therefore, what do they consume? As far as we know, every being has to have a food supply. This was unaddressed. Although it isn’t a crucial issue, it led me down a path that wasn’t pertinent to the story and is one of the few things I didn’t enjoy.
I encountered a few too many punctuation and grammatical errors. Although they were not distracting, more were seen than the guidelines allow. It could use another round of editing.
Because I found this a fun and exciting book to read that was easy to understand, Steve Tanner and the End of the World achieves a rating of three out of four stars. One star was taken away because of the errors and the oversight of needing a food supply. These problems would be easy to correct. I think it would be enjoyed by anyone who appreciates science fiction, from nine-year-old children through teenagers and even some adults.

So, the earth gets depopulated for Kanor? Of course, there'd be consequences.

You're welcome! Thanks for the info as I had no idea!SunVixen wrote: ↑27 Apr 2020, 07:19 Look like a good reading. Nevertheless, Herge has a slightly strange names. Russians don't have that name. There is a name "Sergey" or "Sergei". This name may be abbreviated as "Serge". Perhaps the author mistook “Herge” for “Serge”.
Anyway, thank you for great review.

Yes, and it wouldn't take much to fix those problems. Thanks for the comments!NetMassimo wrote: ↑28 Apr 2020, 01:53 I'm old for this novel, but if the author polishes it a bit to fix the problems that were pointed out, it will be a great choice for young readers who are being introduced to science fiction literature. Thank you for your informative review!

I must say I enjoyed reading this book as well. Most of the main characters are male, but there is one female who also plays a part. Thank for the comments!
