Official Review: Where Madmen Rule by Eugene L Hayman Jr
Mike Hayden stumbled upon Theresa Seyboldt in one of the most unexpected ways. He had been gambling in an unprotected part of Hyumbar and was fleeing after winning because he feared he would be mugged. He heard Theresa Seyboldt screaming for help as she was being beaten by a gang comprising three men as he was trying to hide. Sunworld was a primitive planet and therefore the voices of women and children had been suppressed. However, Theresa had become a threat to some members of the ruling class as she was involved in not only advocating for women and children but also rescuing children who were being indentured. Mike offered to escort her to one of the auction facilities that night after rescuing her. Unfortunately, the young girl she had been tracking had been auctioned. Mike did not know he had dragged himself into a path of no return. Theresa had fascinated him and as a result, he was after a romantic relationship with her, but there was so much that was to unfold with time.
The author wasted no time capturing my attention as he narrated one of the most enthralling stories on romantic, social, and political intrigue. I could not put the book down as it was filled with mind-blowing actions. The narration and world-building were also flawless. I thought the world-building was poor because technological advancement was behind what anyone would expect a thousand years into the future. However, I realized not long afterward Sunworld was a primitive planet while the others had spectacular technological features. The author created a nice distinction between conditions on Sunworld and other planets that had progressed further.
The story was narrated in the first-person point of view and therefore allowing the reader to know every dilemma Mike faced. Whether in the battlefield fighting against formidable opponents or planning how he would sneak Theresa and her two adopted children off-planet, there was a lot he had to weigh before making a decision. I enjoyed following the narrator’s train of thought. In fact, one of the things I loved about the book was Mike’s reasoning. His statements were well-thought-out and had more far-reaching implications than just the existing situation.
Where Madmen Rule by Eugene Louis Hayman Jr. was both intriguing and gripping down to the concluding page. The book was filled with several twists and turns and thus making it almost impossible to guess what would happen next. The suspense in the book also made me turn one page after another as I anticipated how the main conflict would be solved. I was forced to read on to the end because both the protagonists and villains were excellent planners and beguilers. It was hard to guess who would have the upper hand or keep their word in any event.
There is nothing I did not like about this book. The characters were excellently developed. The language employed was also straightforward. I discovered some minor grammatical errors, but they did not detract from the overall enjoyment of the book. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because of the errors, though. I recommend it to all readers of science and fantasy books. Readers should be aware the book contains a few profane words.
