The Hand Bringer by Christopher J. Penington is a book that puts together time travel, vampires and historical fiction. It is a book that will please a lot of readers, not only because of its great writing but also because it is a thrilling story.

We start the book by accompanying the police officer Peter Hadrian, he is thinking about his wife, who got murdered, and his son, who is missing, until he is called to help a couple of officers in a house nearby. When he gets there the officers are laying dead and he has to fight and an incredibly strong man. Luke, a friend of Peter and another cop, comes to his rescue when the man is already dead and Peter is severely injured. On the ambulance, they are asked to come aboard a helicopter that takes them to a secret government bunker. That's when they find out that Peter's attacker was a vampire and that there are a lot of them and in some years they can destroy the human race. But the government has a plan to stop that, and it involves traveling back in time and killing Dracula.

The book has many characters besides the main ones and they are all extremely well developed. My favorite character was Boriana, there is a lot of mystery involving her and she is a strong female character in 1476. There are also many battles and strategies well described, which can be good for some people and not so cool for others.

The author uses well the plot of time travel, not only to explore the subject itself but also to expose the contrast of ideas we have now and what was considered normal at that time. He also uses vampirism to talk about faith in God, especially with a character that at first everyone considers crazy but he can, among other things, send the vampires away using his faith.

I would not recommend this to people younger than 18, there is a lot of violence described, some swearing and sexual content. But to everyone else that enjoys science fiction and wants something different from the current vampires' books, this one is a good choice. I found some errors but they were not many, so I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars.
