Review by Kimberly Fox -- The Hand Bringer
Imagine waking up one day to find out that there soon will be a vampire apocalypse and that time travel is possible! Christopher J. Pennington's The Hand Bringer is all about that. Peter Hadrian, a police officer is attacked by a vampire while responding to a shootout. When he comes to, he finds himself in a government facility that claims to be the Apocalypse Suppression Administration (ASA). As the doctors try to experimentally cure the infection caused by the virus - vampirism, they discover that Peter has developed resistance to the virus. ASA decides to incorporate Peter together with his friend Luke into a plan of going back in time in medieval Romania to hunt down and kill Vlad Dracula who is believed to be the original source of the virus. Peter agrees on condition that they also take him back in time to save his son who had died. When they are taken to ancient Romania, Peter realizes that the mission would not be as easy as it had appeared to be. He also learns that some of his "mission-mates" had plans of their own and might end up jeopardizing the mission!
The book is packed with a lot of intense scenes. I liked how the storyline is filled with a lot of science fiction mixed with mysticism. The plot has been organized to make the story easy to follow and still remains thrilling. Some forms of religious ideologies can be observed in the novel, for example, Peter's meeting with Ioan who I believe symbolizes a God's messenger. I also really enjoyed the dialogues in the book. They were very realistic and funny.
The main themes portrayed in the book are those of friendship, love, bravery and betrayal. The characters were adequately developed and are very relatable. I especially liked Boriana who is shown at first to be a mysterious vampire that had been caught by ASA. Later on, we see that she had willingly let herself be caught in order to fulfill her own goals. Luke is shown to be a good friend who, despite the risks involved, willing follows his friend to protect him. The world building in the book is incredible. It is easy to visualize the terrain and civilizations of ancient Romania.
I would recommend this book to anyone. If you are a science fiction lover, this would be the perfect book for you. Despite the religious ideologies, the storyline is still incredible and I think it adds a spiritual aspect to it.
There is a lot of profanities in the book. There are also lots of violence in the book - bloody battles, rapes and impaling of people. A few sexual scenes can be found in the book but they are not very graphically detailed. I encountered neither a grammatical error nor a spelling error. It was professionally edited. The Hand Bringer definitely deserves a 4 out of 4 stars rating.
