Review by -Immaculata- -- The Hand Bringer
The Hand Bringer by Christopher J. Penington is a tale of vampirism highlighted by time travel. This tale is also bound with romance, historical fiction, and suspense. Although this novel spans across generations, it does not leave the reader bewildered.
Peter Hadrian is plagued by the loss of his son, Stephen. He finds this loss overwhelming and would give anything to go back in time. Unexpected events lead him and his friend, Luke to a confidential organization known as the Apocalypse Suppression Administration. Peter is then assigned an unusual task. Luke, Peter's friend has no family or binding responsibilities and is intrigued enough to offer his assistance. Peter meets a vampire, Borriana briefly before he goes into the portal. Accompanied by Doctor Kolemis, Bat, Luke, and Colonel Scott, he crosses the boundary of time with the intent of bringing an end to vampirism. Unsure of Kolemis' intent, Peter is willing to alter his initial plan as he deems fit whilst on his mission. He is neither fully prepared for the cruelty Vlad Dracula sees as justice, nor for Kolemis' schemes. Most of all, he is taken unawares by Borriana. Is she his past or his present? Will she be willing to be a part of his future?
The Hand Bringer is a beautiful story that transcends time. I love how humor, romance, and fantasy are infused with science and history. Christopher J. Penington narrates a story that intrigues right from the beginning. The cascade of events in this novel is unexpected and captivating. I also love how detailed this novel is. Although the storyline is complex and intricate, it does not leave the reader at a loss. Another element I love is the individuality of each character and how there are no breaks or sudden unexplainable gaps in this novel. The Hand Bringer contains erotic scenes. However, these scenes are not explicit. This novel is also properly edited. On the other hand, the continuous swarm of events was a bit overwhelming. I struggled to remember each character and whose battle was worth the fight. However, I considered this slight downside balanced by the detailed narration in this novel.
I would recommend this novel to those who love to read books centered on history, science, romance, and fantasy. I would not recommend this novel to people who are bothered by the use of profane words. This novel introduces faith in Christ as an indispensable tool for overcoming evil and for redemption. For this reason, I would not recommend this novel to those with dissimilar beliefs.
I rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars. This is because this novel is truly a captivating tale and had me engrossed in the unusual twist of events from beginning to end. I was also satisfied and elated at the conclusion of this novel. If I could give partial ratings, I would rate this novel a 3.8. This slight reduction is because I found the enormous cascade of events initially hard to grasp.
