Review by Yoli_Ngxanga -- The Hand Bringer
How much do we really know about supernatural beings? Are they simply superstition or is there some truth to all these stories? Peter Hadrain is a police officer who responds to his call of duty, only to get infected by a vampire. He does not die as he possesses a unique immunity. ASA, a research organisation, offers him the opportunity to go back in time, and alter the presence of vampires in the present. With the incentive that his missing son will be given a second chance, he agrees. The Hand Bringer follows his journey to 15th century Romania.
Peter’s character is quite intriguing. He is a cynic who is well calculated. He is highly intelligent and physically strong. Peter also avoids grief. He diverts every time his son is brought up in conversation. There is a guilt that lingers over the loss of his son. This is shown in dreams of events he regrets, with his son. However, the possibility of a reunion with his son keeps him motivated. He has trouble trusting ASA and its affiliates. Will they keep their side of the deal? Regardless of his trust issues, he acquires plenty of allies on his mission.
Peter has an incredible support system. We all need that friend that knows how to lighten the mood. Peter’s partner, Luke, embodies this character. Luke agrees to the mission on Peter’s request. He stays at Peter’s side during times of need, from his initial attack at the call of duty. He is also the first to notice a difference in Peter, warning him against drinking excessively. His loyalty to Peter is commendable. Luke offers a hint of humor, even in the most threatening situations. He is easily my favorite character in this book.
Boriana is Peter’s love interest. These two must be destined for each other as they keep crossing paths. Boriana exhibit gumption when she helps Peter with his missions. They share a common struggle, the loss of a child. Betrayal, forgiveness and sacrifice mould their relationship. They risk it all in pursuit of love.
I would give the book 4 out of 4 stars. The book is very descriptive. Christopher J. Penington leaves nothing to the imagination. There are very few spelling errors. However, it contains vulgar and some erotic content so the sensitive reader should be warned. People who enjoy historical fiction should definitely give this book a read.
