Review by oduduima -- The Hand Bringer
Hadrian is a smart dedicated cop who has had his fair share of tragedy in life. However, he doesn’t know what is in stock for him. The Hand Bringer by Christopher J. Penington is a beautiful epic historical fiction with a dash of science fiction. Hadrian is exposed to a vampire bite while on duty, and then the fun begins.
What the book’s description fails to point out is that this is a vampire novel. It is a good type of vampire story though. The author manages to paint vampires in an entirely new light and presents Dracula very intriguingly. The author introduces very interesting twists and turns in his narration that keeps you glued to the very last page. Also, his plot and setting in unique. The author takes care to narrate the scenery which is consistent with the era in which the book was set. This is a wonderful piece, and it reflects the author's dedication to the book.
One thing I really love about this book is how the author makes his narration simple and complex, all at the same time. He introduces complex scientific terms, and explains them at the same time, all without being a bore. This, I must say, is a mastery I admire about the author. Also, the author effectively mixes tragedy and romance, without much erotica. This makes the book highly addictive. The author's sense of humour is another unique quality I fell in love with. Luke’s sarcastic and witty attitude made me laugh out loud a number of times. The author is very good with conversations, which are witty and interesting. Also, the split narrative technique the author adopted, where he narrated the story from the different characters point of view, is very captivating. It elucidates the complexity of the human mind and gives the narrative a richer texture.
One negative for me is that the book is pretty fast-paced. One moment we were with Hadrian on his beat, and the very next we are with Dracula several light-years in the past. The book really takes the reader on a whirlwind journey and doesn’t bother to stop for a breather. However, it was an exciting whirlwind journey, and I think the author made up for this with his witty conversations. Also, I dislike the various forms of animal cruelty presented in the book. I am a lover of animals, dogs especially, and seeing them used for scientific trials really upsets me.
Furthermore, the book is well-edited. Apart from a few missing punctuations, the book contains no significant typographical error. I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters are very likeable, and the plot is immersive. I recommend this book to all lovers of vampire tales. Also, lovers of time travel stories and historical fictions will definitely fall in love with this book.
