Review by Emillyosewe -- The Hand Bringer
The Handbringer by Christopher .J. Penington is about 5 people who travel back in time into the year 1476 to try and destroy strigoi(vampires)as they are referred to in this book.
The protagonist, Peter Hadrian/ petru is injected with a vaccine at the ASA( Apocalypse Suppression Administration) which gives him increased strength, lightning reflexes, endurance, durability and night vision. The other 4;Luke who is peters bestfriend, Dr. Kolemis, Colonel Scott and Bat are given a vaccine made from from Peters' blood which also make them strong and immune to the vampire bite.
The book is action packed from the first chapter. I found it difficult to put the book down once i started reading. The authors description of events is so detailed and vivid you'll feel like one with the characters on their journey. This bool is about vampires, betrayap, conspiracies and and a dash of romance all fused into one.
What i liked about this book is how the author depicts the friendship between Luke and Peter. Through their conversations you can tell that they have both had difficult pasts and this has brought them closer. Sometimes they fight but at the end of the day they have each others backs.
Another thing i liked about this book is how Bat has been potrayed as a dimwit. Luke makes fun of him throughout the book because of how he talks and his supposed 'inability' to understand big words. Their back and forth brings in humour and it sometimes breaks the serious mood of the plot.
Towards the end of the book the author reveals to us Bats true identity and you cant help but be shocked. Its one of those moments where you are completely caught off guard and it just cements the fact that you cant judge a book by its cover.
The love between Boriana and Peter is another thing that made me like this book. Their love was not without challenges and obstacles but through patience, trust and communication their love stood the test of time.
There are instances in the book where we see mention of prophecies and God and how important it is to always have Faith in God and ones self.
The only thing i disliked about this book is the vivid description of Vlad Draculas' impaling tactics. It literally left little to the imagination.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it was well written and professionally edited and the story just flows perfectly.
This book will appeal to anyone who loves sci fi fantasy amd does not mind the use of obscenities.
I would not recommend this book to readers below the age of 16 because of the many curse words in the book.
This book was professionally edited.
