Review by MBAGATHI -- The Hand Bringer
The novel The Hand Bringer by Christopher J. Penington is a book that is insightful, creative and suspenseful. The book is highly unpredictable and keeps the readers engaged till the end. The circumstances around the life of the leading character Peter Hadrian are highly fascinating. Moreover, the themes discussed are delightful.
One such theme is the theme of impacts of technology in the contemporary society. Peter Hadrian must travel back to the old Romania to destroy some wild vampire creatures that are out to destroy the world. The creatures multiply fast, are highly powerful, strong and bite human beings. Persons who are bitten by them dies and reincarnates by being one of them. All persons attacked by those creatures are dead except for Peter. Peter had been exposed to those creatures as a child and is body develops antibodies that are immune to them. He has Romanian roots. Moreover, Peter following the recent attacks develops thick muscles, predatory instincts and moves faster than any living being. To completely stop their spread, Peter who is immune to their threat must travel back in time, when those creatures are still few and destroy them before they multiply and destroy life on earth. His colleagues on this journey have been injected with the antibodies drawn from Peter to make them immune to those creatures.
All the characters in this book are interesting. For example, Dr. Kolemis who is among the persons traveling with Peter and the others finally makes alliance with Dracula, the common enemy that they had made the journey to medieval Romania to destroy. He is suffering from cancer and the Dracula promises him a longer life. If bitten by the wild creatures, he would die and resurrect from the dead. That would save him from the pains of cancer treatment and chemotherapy and give him a longer life after his resurrection.. I found that interesting. I believe other readers will enjoy that.
Another fantastic character in this novel is Boriana, the lady who helps Peter on his mission to destroy the Vlad Dracula and Deycheaba. Boriana hands Peter a dagger that is to be used in Killing Dracula. She is bitter following the killing of his father and the destruction of his father’s estate by Dracula. She later gets married to Peter and has her insecurities on the success of Peter’s mission. I found Boriana and Peter conversation highly informative.
Another feature I loved in this book is that all the questions I had at the beginning of the book were well answered at the end of the reading. For instance, I wondered what the term Hand-Bringer meant in this book. Was it Peter or Boriana? What was the fate of Peter’s mission to Old Romania? Fortunately, these questions were all answered at the end.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading science, historical fictions and romance genres. The main context of this book is on the science of preventing the wild creatures from multiplying and destroying the world. However, it is laced with beautiful history and romance. This book is inappropriate to young readers because of its complexity plus there are some erotic scenes in it. It is exceptionally well edited and has no typographical errors. I completely enjoyed this book and give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. It has enjoyable characters and discusses themes that reflect the society.
