The Hand Bringer by Christopher J. Penington is a sci-fi/fantasy novel that has a very interesting plot revolving around vampires. It is different from conventional vampire stores because it has a scientific explanation, for the existence and creation of vampires. It also involves time travel, which adds a whole different angle to the story. The protagonist of this novel is Peter Hadrian, a cop in Dallas is not able to come to terms with the death of his wife and missing son. He gets infected by a supernatural creature and is sent to a military facility, along with another officer, Luke McElroy. They come to know that creature they came across is a vampire, and they have to travel back in time, along with Bat Jackson, a convict, and Dr. Chester Kolemis, a scientist, to kill Dracula in Romania, to destroy the origin of vampirism. The reason why Peter agrees to go this mission is that he is promised by the organization leading this mission, the ASA (Apocalypse Suppression Administration), that they will find his son in return.

The book is very gripping and takes you through medieval Romania. It is hard to keep it down until you have read it completely. The way the whole concept of vampirism is explained using science stands out. The parts dealing with time travel are written in a very interesting way. A lot of unexpected things happen throughout the story and it seems a bit complicated sometimes. The reader might have to go back and re-read a paragraph to understand something because a lot of things happen simultaneously. It is not a bad thing though, because it just makes things more interesting and demands your complete attention.

Each character has their motive and it is interesting to see how they contribute to the 'mission'. Peter's character is very well-written and he is truly projected as 'the hero'. The story moves quickly, right from the beginning and there is not a single dull moment.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for its unique plot, good writing, and amazing use of history and science to captivate the readers. The book is exceptionally well-edited. I recommend this book to history and science-fiction lovers or anyone interested in reading about vampires. I would not recommend this book to people who do not like very complicated plots. This story does have profanity, violence, and accounts of sexual intimacy. Hence, it is not suitable for a younger audience.
