Chilling, nail-biting action that will keep you on the edge of your seat wanting more, but scared to find out what happens next. Scent of the Beast by Ron Chinchen will shock and terrify you until the very last page. If you’re looking for a well-written thriller that will lead you down a path of madness and mayhem, then Scent of the Beast is the one for you!

As Police Superintendent Jake McLynn sets out to investigate some strange occurrences in the small indigenous communities that reside in the Kimberley in Australia, he is curious to uncover what could be causing such mayhem. There he discovers something terrifying and brutal encompassing the vast land and decimating everything within its path. When he realizes the magnitude of the danger, he attempts to warn the surrounding communities along with his colleagues. However, as the threat continues to draw closer the inactivity from the hands of the higher-ups at the political level continually brings the danger closer to catastrophic proportions.

Honestly, I haven’t read such a well-written book in a very long time. Everything was incredibly planned and thought out, there is even an extensive character list at the beginning that was very helpful to reference throughout the novel. Set several decades in the future, the thrill of the book begins at full force with tragedy striking from the first chapter. The rest of the first half of the book is a measured, powerful work of art, with lulls of action that burst into bits of terror and horror throughout. The tension that this causes leads to immense amounts of chaos and mayhem with each turn of the page.

I thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue throughout the novel, it was witty and exciting, and very entertaining. The primary characters were full of life and added spice and vigor to the story, with the secondary characters adding a fun essence all their own. The scenery was breathtaking, I felt as if I were traveling around Australia with Jake McLynn. The pace at times was a bit slow, but the rest definitely made up for it. There isn’t a whole lot that I can say that I disliked about this novel. The parts that were a bit slow, I felt my attention ebb but it fully re-engaged as I continued to read the novel. Not counting the horror and gore, the novel was fairly clean. There weren't any sexual innuendos and only some swear words throughout the novel.

I wholeheartedly give Scent of the Beast 4 out of 4 stars. It had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. It had twists, turns, and shocking character reveals. Although it is an excellent novel, due to the horror and gore, I wouldn’t recommend it for younger readers. I would though, definitely recommend this book for anyone else looking for a mystery/horror novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat, wanting for more.

I'm not quite clear on whether this book is horror, sci-fi, or a combination of both. "Strange Occurrences" makes it sound like it might be classified as paranormal as well. However, I haven't heard such high praise for a book in quite a while! I may have to give this one a look. Thanks for the thorough review!
