The experience at GenTech’s laboratory will haunt Kata and Tau for as long as they live. Both are plagued with memories and flashbacks of the abuse and torture they were subjected to by the hands of scientists. Now, after being held captive in a lab for two years Kata, formerly known as Kalin Taylor, has managed to escape with his best friend. Kata plans to return home to Trandellia, where he and Tau can start new lives and put their past of suffering behind them. This turns out to be harder than expected, as GenTech has not stopped searching for them, desperate for both to return to the lab; Kata and Tau are unsure who to trust.

Things do not get any easier as Kata finds himself caring for someone who has no experience with the outside world. GenTech’s laboratory is all Tau knows, after all, he was created there. Despite all his fear and confusion, Tau is happy to be free and both will stop at nothing to keep it that way. Then, matters take a turn for the worst. Kata arrives on Trandellia and asks the vasari for help and protection from GenTech and the Diamonds. Unsurprisingly, the vasari has her own agenda. She knows Kata’s genetic mutations make him the perfect human killing machine. As a result, she has a bounty hunter take Tau and forces Kata to go on a mission to Atthiras to search for an ambassador’s missing daughter. He must bring her back before the ship that Tau is on reaches GenTech. Once again, Kata and Tau’s future is uncertain, and Kata must do whatever it takes to be reunited with his best friend.

Homecoming is a science-fiction thriller novel written by Jude Austin. It is the second installment in her Projects book series. This is a book that is so good, you do not want it to end! It is intriguing and keeps readers wanting to turn the page. I could not put it down. This story is a suspense thriller and at the same time a heartfelt drama. I applaud Austin’s level of creativity. Not only was her story amazing, but the elements of her story also allow readers to vividly envision this futuristic world that she has brought to life. I liked that even though it was a violent and gut-wrenching story, a sort of balance was created with the story’s characters. I particularly liked Alan and Kurai. Throughout the book, Austin gives readers insight into Kalin’s (Kata’s) life before GenTech and the inhumane way Tau was treated by scientists before Kalin even arrived. They both endured huge amounts of trauma, and it was nice to see characters that actually took an interest in the well-being of these boys. The small moments of humor were also a nice touch to the story.

There isn’t anything that makes the story unlikeable. However, some readers may find the themes in this book uncomfortable. There is also profanity used throughout the story, and it is somewhat important to enjoy sci-fi novels. The only thing that I would bring attention to is that the cover chosen for the book is misleading. The design reads like a book for older children. This is definitely not a book for youngsters to read.

My rating for this book is 4 out of 4 stars. This novel is well-written and well-edited. Readers don’t necessarily have to read Project Tau (the first book in the series) to understand this story. Project Tau is an excellent novel as well. I highly recommend both books. I hope Austin decides to continue the series, and if she has already decided to do so, I really look forward to reading the next one.
