Official Review: Cloaked Blade by Serenity Marie
Cloaked Blade by Serenity Marie is a short story about Steve Colescott and his family during his election period. When Steve witnesses his daughter’s death during one of his speeches, he is determined to find her killer and seek justice. He has had a dark past; watching his second child die may be the last straw for him. Follow this story as Steve deals with his past while pushing forward with his future.
Shorts stories are great. They are quick and easy to get through, but they can still hold a lot of excitement and power. In the case of Cloaked Blade, I didn’t feel any of that. The synopsis of the book made it seem as though the story was going to be focused around finding the person who shot and killed Steve's daughter; however, the entire plot of the story simply built up to that idea. I did not read about the actual attempt to find her killer until the last few pages.
While the idea behind the story was great, I just do not believe that it was played out effectively. The writing style was nice and easy to read through, but the plot had very little action. The ending was interesting, but it was over so abruptly that I didn’t get the chance to process what had happened. The plot and characters were two-dimensional, and I did not feel like I was getting the big picture of the story.
I rate this book 1 out of 4 stars. I have read many great short stories, but I am sad to say that this novella had little impact on me. It was nice to be able to sit down and read this in such a short amount of time, so I did enjoy that aspect of Cloaked Blade. Steve was also a very interesting character; he is the only person that I felt was truly complex and had personal issues that he was trying to work through. He wanted to be better for both his family and his country, and I did appreciate that.
If you are looking for an extremely fast story to read, this may be for you! Although I have negative feelings toward this story, I think that others may enjoy it more. I love a good novella, but in the case of Cloaked Blade, there was just not much that I liked. It was a huge bummer, and I am disappointed with my overall experience of the book.
