Thanks

That's kind of a loaded question for a lot of reasons. People always have likes and dislikes, and while objectivity is certainly possible, I don't know if we can ever say for certain who is the best. That being said, Phillip K Dick is a beast and an awesome writer. Androids Dream of Electric Sheep has to be one of my favorite Sci-fi novels ever.

I like Ray Bradbury (Martian Chronicles, Fahrenheit 451) and Arthur C. Clarke (Rendezvous with Rama, 2001,Childhood's End) but I read so many others also.

I have read a lot of Sci-Fi and find it hard to pick a favorite, but I'll throw one out for you: Frederik Pohl - The Heechee novels. Very compelling stuff.

I'm not going to even pretend that I can pick a single favourite author but I do rather like:
Isaac Asimov: The Foundation Series; I, Robot (yes, the loose basis for the film but really an anthology of short stories)
Anne MaCaffrey: The Crystal Singer trilogy, The Rowan
Gordon Dickson: Danger, Human!; Dorsai
Orson Scott Card: Ender's Game etc

I don't have an individual author to nominate, but I can identify the following three as some of the best sci-fi I've read (in no particular order):
  • Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick
Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein
The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut

Why pick. I LOVE Dune, but I also love Neal Stephenson's novels. They're all gravy. Sci-fi is the best.

Man, just this summer one of his books found its way to my hands, Jem i think was the title, and boy did I enjoy that book, I read the whole thing in two seatings, which is fairly unusual for me. Usually I don't read much sci-fi since Asimov's foundation serious burnt me out a bit and tired me, but that book restored my faith and when I feel that I need a break from my usual historical fiction and massacres of epic proportions, Pohl's books have been a very reliable source of entertainment. Also Douglas Adams is very dear to me but I am not entirely sure he falls in the same category. Certainly a very different writing style. All in all, Frederik Pohl is a definite yes if you're looking for good sci-fi

What a big question! I'm more of a fantasy buff myself, but my favorite sci fi writers is probably Douglas Adams. Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy is just too fantastic of a series to pass up.

If you like books for advanced readers/adults, I’d recommend Kurt Vonnegut. He has one called Sirens of Titan (I believe that’s the title) that I really enjoyed. There’s also a book series called Ender’s game that follows a teen/preteen that’s pretty accessible for readers middle school aged through adulthood. Ray Bradbury is an excellent classic writer, as well as George Orwell.
