Review by Divergent fire -- The Hand Bringer
The Hand Bringer by Christopher .J Penington deals with time travel, vampirism, science and fiction. Peter Hadrian is an intelligent and brave police officer who lost his son in a mysterious situation. One night he gets attacked by a vampire and gets admitted to a government agency hospital. There he undergoes some laboratory procedures and gets genetically modified with enormous potential that can deal with vampires. Then he is instructed to go back in time, along with some ASA officers and his friend Luke to destroy the vampires so that vampires do not become a threat to the modern world. The story progresses with numerous twists and turns packed in suspense and mystery, that happens during this mission and becomes complex with past and present perfectly blended with a considerable amount of history. This is a fast paced science fiction which makes the reader sit at the edge of the seat.
I felt that The Hand Bringer is also a story that gives great importance to basic human values like love, faith, hope, determination and relationships. I love the character of Peter Hadrian because of all these values he cherishes. He hoped for the good and fought with determination. He sets an example of how to fight the darkness and negative around us without hesitation even when we feel weak and hurt.
The relationship between all the lead characters are well defined and very much similar to real life with love, trust issues, anger, fight and friendship among them. Through Peter's and Boriana's relationship the author gives a message by telling the readers to dare to live for the hope of reunion of their broken love and to believe in and fight for what they love. What I like most about the book is it’s influence in showing, how faith can change things. When Ioan the blind told Peter that, the sword can do nothing without faith, I felt that, Christopher .J Pennington used the word “sword” as a symbol of our skills and potentials, which, when used with enough faith gives amusing results.
Some of the deaths detailed showed how helpless and flickering are human mind at the time of death. That was so touching moments about the book. The least favourite and disappointing part of the story is the relationship between Luke and Elizabeth because that portion failed to make up to the strong storyline created till then. But the complexity and detailing of every situation add beauty to the story. The story also shows the influence of The Holy Bible and many times highlights the importance of having faith in God. The conversation where the shepherd tells Luke to be careful of who’s blood to choose to put the hope on tells the importance of believing in Jesus Christ. The portions written about death also points out the influence of Christianity.
My rating for this book is 4 out of 4 stars because this is not a typical cliché type time travel or vampire story. This is a lot more than that. The descent editing of the book also motivated me to give this rating. I would love to recommend this book for all the readers who want to try a different type of fun, mysterious and adventure-filled story. I do not appreciate children under sixteen reading this book because of the profane languages used at times and the disturbing details of death used in the story. Overall this is a wonderful story and I would love to read more from the author.
