First off, WOW! This is an apocalyptic sci-fi novel. It is also the first in a trilogy. The book is 376 pages long, which is a good length as it is not too short. The grammar in Daimones is very European in style (which makes total sense as the author is from Europe). For me, it added to the authenticity of the story. It is set in Switzerland and France with a remarkable attention for detail.

Dan Amenta wakes up one morning and on his way to drop off his daughter at school, discovers that the world has undergone a drastic change. It appears that everyone is dead except for Dan and his wife (Mary) and daughter (Annah). They undergo many changes trying to adapt to a new world and desperately hoping that someone else is alive. Eventually, they find Laura. Laura is young, beautiful, bold and very liberal. This causes some interesting developments.

Everyone is clueless as to what happened to cause almost everyone on the planet to die at the same time. As time goes on, things become clearer in that regard. I don’t want to ruin the surprise so I will leave it at that. Suffice it say, that the truth is surprising and very detailed.

I really enjoyed this book. I am somewhat of a sci-fi fan myself but for me this was a very, very good book. I look forward to reading the rest of the series. As a debut novel, Massimo Marino has done a remarkable job. The attention to detail and description is very rare in any book but certainly in a first time author.

The characters in Daimones were very well developed. At first, the story seemed to take a while to get going but after that, it was very fascinating and pulled you right along. I felt like I was right there with them and could picture everything that was going on clearly. Dan is a very strong male, able to adapt as needed to his surroundings. Mary was a little too emotional for me in the first half and then almost stoic in the second, but it didn't detract any from the story. I did feel that Annah could have played more of a role in the book. For being 12 years old, she didn't do very much. I felt like she was much younger than she was actually portrayed to be. Laura was a bit of a shock. I will leave it at that. These are minor details though, and I don’t feel like it took away anything from the story line.

The grammar in this book is excellent! I didn't notice any misspellings or typos (a rarity for me). These two things alone made for a very enjoyable book. I really look forward to the next one and would recommend this series to anyone that enjoys sci-fi or apocalyptic books. I am giving this book a 4 out of 4 star rating.
