[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "BETA: The Killing" by Maxwell Coffie.]

BETA: The Killing by Maxwell Coffie, is a futuristic crime thriller set in a universe with several different worlds and species that use magic. It is a well-written and engaging story of a young detective who suffers a loss at the hands of a serial killer and how she uses her skills to find the killer and uncover unexpected truths along the way.

Arra Everglade, young ambitious detective in Crystal City, uncovers a gruesome serial killer. In a world of magic and superior technology she strives to uncover the truth. Trying to prove herself as a young detective her investigation leads her in an unexpected direction. After suffering the loss of a close friend and losing her job, she finds herself in a position to continue pursuing the killer who has turned her life upside down.

When she is asked to join an elite group that has been pursuing the killer for several years, she finds herself on a path of self-discovery as she hunts the killer responsible for her friend’s death. Faced with life changing choices she pursues what she thinks is right and uncovers much more than just a single serial killer. Arra truly rises to the occasion when the life of her sister is threatened but can she save her sister and capture the killer she is after?

I liked the way the author developed the characters in BETA: The Killing, I quickly grew to like Arra and was drawn into her story. The use of futuristic new worlds and magic gave the story an interesting twist and it was not hard to pick up the meaning of new words and phrases, although I did find some of the words used in place of curse words interesting, close enough to the real thing without actually being the real thing. The author keeps you involved with twists and turns and an “almost” love story. I enjoyed reading BETA: The killing and even wonder with the way it ended if this could be the start of a series. I would read more books by this author and would be especially interested in another Arra Everglade book.

I give Beta: The Killing 3 out of 4 stars. It is not one of those books that I just could not put down until I was done but it is a good read and I would recommend it to anyone who likes a science fiction mystery.
