Review by Kemmy11 -- The Demon of the Well
The Demon of the Well by James B. Hendricks is a poetic narrative book that talks about deceit and greediness. This book shows that to every action, there are consequences. There are two parts to the book (Part one is the trader’s story, while part two is the second journey).
A group of children cajoled an old trader who is now a woodcarver, to share his story. He (the trader) started by relating his encounter with two brothers who were discussing the location of a treasure (the magic cup) with powers that could show its owner visions of the past and future. While in hiding, he thought to himself: "With such powers, I could rule with greater sanity, I swore, than these cruel and heedless rulers with their cruel and senseless wars." He made himself visible to the brothers and presented himself as a desert guide. He led them to the Devil's spring where they met the demon of the well. The demon offered the trader a deal in exchange for the cup. This deal came with consequences that affected him and his country.
I loved how the author was consistent with his rhythm and rhymings in the book. Many poets have issues with consistency. He (the author) was able to incorporate a bit of suspense and tension into the book, hence, making it difficult to predict. The narration was beautiful. There was a sweet flow right from the beginning of the book. The book had so many lessons to be learnt. Capping this great piece into 72 pages was a wise decision made by the author. The addition of more pages to the book will get the reader bored and tired of reading. I loved how each word in the book was carefully chosen and scanty. The Demon of the Well is a book I want to read again because of how great it was. In all fairness, the book was exceptionally flawless. I enjoyed it that there was no part I disliked.
I will rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because of the originality of the story. The author was able to bring out the uniqueness of the book by writing in verses. That was great. Also, the book was well-written and edited that I found no typographical or grammatical errors. I enjoyed reading every part of the book that it got me glued from start to finish. Generally, the book was mind-blowing.
This book is suitable for both adults and children as there were no records of explicit scenes and profanities in the book. Readers of poetic fantasy books will find it handy. I do not recommend this book to violent scene haters.
