Review by OB Brian -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
The adventure continues. Matthew Tysz’s We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the second book in his fantasy series, We are Voulhire. The story takes place in Virko, a Voulhiran city that is deemed the heart of industry in the kingdom of Voulhire.
Galen Bray, in the company of his friends, Rowan and Demetrius, travels north to Virko. Their mission is to get a supply of iron from the Voulhirian industrial hub for his forge, hence help jumpstart the development of his town, Magnum Caelum. Virko is, however, engulfed in darkness, not from industrial emissions, but something more sinister and demonic. Galen realises that they are in Virko for more than just iron; that they will have to stay a bit longer than they had planned.
Matthew Tysz expertly interweaves the spiritual, magical, and physical worlds to generate a mysterious, action-packed world in the novel. The author picturesquely describes the surroundings, events, and characters, imbuing in readers, a sense of oneness with the narration. Meanwhile, he masks the story-line, twisting it in unfathomable ways to create a sense of mystery that nags the reader to continue reading. Besides, the characters’ hilarious colloquy is hypnotic; it glued me to the pages of the novel, extracting a smile at one point and laughter at another.
Nevertheless, there were two things in We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko that were not appealing to me. First, the top hats donned by the Virken nobles and the tandem bicycle in the streets of Yamon Soul, are somewhat inconsistent with the time of the setting. Secondly, I came across one grammatical error. While it did not interfere with my reading, its presence bothers me because the first book in the We are Voulhire series had no errors.
That said, the author did an impeccable job in creating this fantasy world. The English used is easy to understand. Also, the editors did a commendable job, though I recommend another round of editing to remove the error, as it bodes ill for the series. Furthermore, the book contains minimal vulgarity, and is devoid of erotic scenes.
All in all, the story-line is original, and the narration brilliant. The break in the timeline and the grammatical error did not affect the readability of the book. Consequently, I rate We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to lovers of fantasy novels or ancient tales. To understand the plot, I advise readers to check out We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies prior to this captivating novel.
