We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz, is the second book of We are Voulhire series. This is a science fiction and fantasy novel. This story is about an industrial city in Voulhire named Virko, the place where only power and money speaks.

Galen, the so-called protagonist of this novel is trying to cope with the new place, Voulhire, arrives at Virko, assuming that he has a chance to serve his country. Meanwhile, the founder of Virko, Lord Venden Hrelek, is on his deathbed and his son Hans Hrelek will be his successor. In these circumstances, the Lord asks the trio, that is, Galen, Demetrius, and Rowan to monitor Hans’ moves. In addition to this, a demon resides in the lord’s mansion with its evil intentions. So, what do you think? Will the trio be able to protect the city? Can feudalism and capitalism be replaced in Virko? Well, you will have to read this book to find out.

We are Voulhire: The fires of Virko is a dark book with a great plot. This book shows how a man’s obsession for money, power, and strength can evoke a sinister in him. Though this is the second book of the series, it can be read alone. However, I suggest that you read the first book before reading this to understand and relate to the characters better. The author’s writing style is quite impressive. It is simple, crisp, and eloquent which keeps the readers engaged.

The biggest appeal for me is the merge of horror and fantasy in this novel. The existence of a demon acted as a spice in the story. Many unexpected twists and turns keep the reader wondering what is going to happen next. I appreciate how well the author has crafted the characters. They are all unique and interesting. Among all, my favorite one is Demetrius. I find him quite funny and dynamic.

It is disappointing that Galen, being the actual hero of the story has a very little role to play. His character seems dull when compared to Demetrius. For me, it looked like Demetrius is leading the scenes rather than Galen. The story would have been better for me if the positivity was also given importance as it is given to evil and negative things. It seems like evil and wrong things are highlighted more in this book which may have an undesirable impact on the readers.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading this book. Most parts of the book is a page-turner. But there are also drudging scenes which involve wars, fights, etc. I think these scenes are exaggerated. I did not find any errors in this book, so I assume that this is professionally edited. With that being said, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I do not want to rate this any lower because this book kept me hooked despite all the negative points that I have mentioned earlier.

This book contains profanity, violence, and obscene scenes, so I do not recommend this to young readers and sensitive people. This is suitable for the people interested in reading sci-fi and fantasy novels, especially with a touch of magic and horror in it.

Intriguing! I love a fantasy with good twists and turns. What a shame that the protagonist had such a little role to play though. Thanks for this great review!

I agree with you that Galen's maximum potential was not realized in this book, as he was ocassionally seen. Great review!

I read the first book in the series, and I was very impressed. I had hopes that Galen would play a key role in the next book, but much to my disappointment, It appears he has been overshadowed by Demetrius and they are now in Voulhire. Nice review.

I enjoyed this book too. Sod was indeed the spice of the story while Folcro is just one mean human being. Keep up the good work.
