Review by Yahya Dalal -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of V...
We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second novel of a 9 book series. The book primarily continues from the first book, where we follow the journey of Galen and his companions. His journey leads him to the great city of Virko, a large and successful industrial town, which is currently amidst an economic boom. We are then introduced to many new characters, most notably, Lord Kayden and Folcro. We see The city of Virko undergoing many changes and realise the city isn’t in as good as a place as one may think. Many troubles await Galen, Demetrious and Rowan as they trod the path of uncertainty.
We also see the perspective of some other characters and learn their backstory’s. The book’s main antagonist, Lord Meldorath, is even more frightening than in the first book, and his appearance causes even more chaos than what the reader would have expected.
The fantasy and mystical aspect of the book are even more profound, and we learn much more about the detailed, and beautiful world Tysz has created. Philosophy is also integrated superbly in the book, with references to cause and effect, time and space, and the very nature of reality. This is something I appreciated, as a person who has a keen interest in philosophy, the book didn’t disappoint. Societal influence, capitalism and the system of feudalism are also talked about. The writer makes the reader question his role in society and even questions the foundations of society itself. Tysz allows the reader to see the system of society objectively, through Galen, as a refugee. It adds to the many deeper meanings of the novel.
My favourite part about the book was the chemistry between Galen, Rowan and Demetrious. More specifically the tension, sarcasm and banter between Rowan and Demetrious. Alternatively, I was disappointed by the way the book ended. I didn’t like how stale the last few pages were and felt they were almost rushed.
However aside from that, the book was almost perfect. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars as it was wonderfully written and the structure was immaculate. Nearly everything flowed perfectly, and we saw a progression of the storyline from the first book of the series. Character development was also noticeable and the use of descriptive language and imagery was just as good as the first. I didn’t come across any errors or typos, and the book seemed professionally edited. I wouldn’t recommend the book to younger audiences, because the book does contain profanity. I recommend this book to anyone above the age of 12, and especially to those who love fantasy and enjoyed the first book.
