Review by cat noir -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
We Are Voulhire: The Fires Of Virko is the second book in the We Are Voulhire series by Matthew Tysz. In the first book, the author introduces us to Voulhire and everything in it. The protagonist, Galen, got to escape from the terrible Land of Princes and arrived at Voulhire to look after his deceased great uncle's forge. Trouble begins blooming, and evil forces are rising to make Voulhire theirs.
The first strike was on Hillport, where half of its population and their lord were brutally murdered. In the second book, the focus is on Virko. Galen and his friends were asked to obtain iron from Virko so that they can expand their forges. It was such a simple task. Go to Virko, please some lords, and get the iron they needed. They indeed managed to get the iron, but there was a cost to pay. They were given a dangerous task to accomplish. A minor mistake and all hell could break loose. Will they achieve success? Or will they make things worse and mark the beginning of the doom of Voulhire?
One thing I've observed while reading the books by Matthew Tysz is his choice of characters. They are unique and complex. All his characters seem to possess deep personalities, and they make me think a lot. He never mentions who the hero or villain is. We have to analyze and decide, and this makes his books very interesting to read . The plot is crafted cleverly, and I have to appreciate the author's skill in weaving such a thrilling story.
I love everything about this book. This series is very addictive, and you cannot simply predict what's going to happen next. The plot will haul you into Voulhire, and you'll feel as if you're one of the characters. Usually, I write what I think about the characters in my reviews, but I won't do it for this series. If I do that, it'll take away the fun and excitement while you are reading. The author had written in multiple characters' perspectives. You get to think from all angles and comprehend everything more. Even though we get to know what each character thinks, the author still maintains mystery in the plot. This book is a beautiful blend of mystery, thrill, dark magic, and interesting characters.
I rate We Are Voulhire: The Fires Of Virko by Matthew Tysz four out of four stars. The plot contains instances of extreme violence and mentions of sexual abuse. There is only very light erotic content. Profanity was used frequently throughout the book. I couldn't discover any errors, and it seems that the book was professionally edited. Those who are fantasy and dark magic fans will love this series. I can't wait to read the next installment.
