We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second book in his collection of the fantasy series titled “We are Voulhire”. In this book, the author takes us to a new city in Voulhire named Virko. Here, we got to see the end result of the politics in play amongst the people of virko.

In this second series, more intriguing characters from the city of Voulhire were introduced. Amongst these characters was Lord Hans also known as Folcro, the son of Lord Venden. A young lord who is secretly against his father’s plan to end noble sovereignty in the city, and replace them with merchants. Lord Kayden, also a young lord who seemed to have an unexplainable past with Folcro. He chose to start a family rather than face the truth about his sexuality. Lord Dragan an evil ally of Folcro, who would do anything to remain in charge. Eiodi Gadesh the head of the church, wise, yet ignorant of the powers that be. And Demetrius a monk whose relentless pursuit of faith, and religious beliefs cost the city of Virko the lives of its people. Now all these characters had Fascinating narratives, but the most interesting of them all was Folcro. Folcro was believed by his people to be a very quiet, and noble prince, who did not get involved in the politics of his city. But he was quite the opposite, an evil man, who did the unimaginable for reasons best known to him alone. One of such things was removing a baby from the belle of a woman, and stitching same into the belle of a man just for the fun of it. As readers read on, they would discover that indeed not all that glitters is gold.

For me, this second series demonstrated the fact that, the society is just a political game of chess, where the masses are seen as the sacrificial pawns being played by the people in power, and this was clearly proven at the end of the book, when Folcro’s demons were mistakenly released, and they ended up pouncing on the innocent citizens of Virko, who obliviously served their rulers without contempt, or queries. Whereas the persons truly responsible for the situation fled the city unharmed.

What I liked most about this book was the author’s consistency in moving from one character’s tale to the next, without getting the readers confused as to how he got there. However, what I disliked most about the book was the author’s use of complex words such as, confabulating and bifurcation. This was a bit distracting as it mostly disturbed my reading flow. Other than that, I enjoyed reading this book.

The book appears to be professionally well edited as it contained only minor errors. Furthermore, I must applaud the authors writing style as it is extremely captivating, and entertaining. For this, I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. I did not give it a lower rating because as I said earlier, it was well edited. A very interesting book that could keep a reader glued till he or she got to the last page. Best of all is that it wets your appetite, and makes you want more as you continue to read. I would recommend this book to every adult especially those who are into fantasy, and western novels. This is a good read. It is however not recommended for children below the age of 14 because I do not think that it is suitable for them.

I also was surprised the demons decided to attack Virko while letting Galen and his cohorts escape. Thanks for your honest review Vivian.
