We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second novel in the sci-fi magic series called We are Voulhire. In this part, we are continuing our journey alongside the protagonist Galen Bray, a refugee from the Land of the Princes, and his company: Rowan, Galen Onita's executor, and Demetrius, Eiodi's imbuer. After the army of Riva Rohavi defeated Hillport, all the supplies of iron that should have been sent to Magnum Caelum have been stolen. Because Galen desperately needs iron for the advancement of his forge, he decided to ask Virken lord Venden Hrelek for a help. Galen's new friends committed to following him on his trip to the industrial city of Virko. The story leads us through our trio's adventures and all the situations that occur in the meantime. We also get to know Kayden Morgan, son of a recently-passed noble, and Hans Hrelek, lord Venden's son, whose fate is unknown but enticing to follow and guess about.

This part of the series is written in a first and a third view. There are many already known characters and many new ones introduced. I was especially fascinated by Kayden and Hans, which the author meticulously connected and thoroughly described. Their bond is apparent, but we still don't know what to expect from them. All of this makes the story interesting to follow, as we are introduced to intricate webs of Voulhirian relationships.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It like that it offers more descriptions of characters and cityscapes than the first book of the series. We find ourselves amidst the war, determination, friendship, jealousy, and many other complex human behaviors. The book introduced demons – curious creatures with pig snouts and big manes, which made the storyline even more interesting. Through reading, I gained respect for many characters just to lose it afterward – I experienced an emotional rollercoaster. All of these mentioned are certain characteristics of a quality read I would recommend. There is nothing that I disliked about this book.

In the book, there are several profanities that I didn't find offensive. However, to some people, they may be a bother or seem unnecessary. There were some sexual words included but no erotic nor sex scenes. There was a mention of monks and priests but nothing that could be a nuisance to readers of any religion. I would recommend this book to every adult. I wouldn't recommend it to children because of profane words and detailed descriptions of battles and killings.

The book is excellently edited. I checked many words that looked questionable but found no errors. Any reader can see how much effort is put into getting this book polished as it is right now.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because I enjoyed reading it, surprisingly even more than the first book. I've become familiar with Voulhire, its magic, lifestyle, and I love it. I'm genuinely looking forward to reading the next part. All the praises to Matthew Tysz, as this is a wonderful read.
