We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz follows the adventures of Galen Bray. Galen’s rich great uncle, who lives in Voulhire, has died and given his forge and money to Galen. Now, Galen will start his new course of life in Voulhire, with his inherited forge and home, and will learn all about this magic-ridden, peaceful place called Voulhire.

The book starts with an About the Author section. Mostly, author’s sections are at the end of the book. This was my first time reading a book with the author’s section at the start. Then comes the map of Voulhire. There’s also a link to the Reference guide. All these were included, but the most important things were missing. There was no Chapter index or page numbers. It made it troublesome for me to know where I was in the book.

The story commences with a “Once upon a time” tale. The book fascinated me from the start. The Emperor and his sons story made me more intrigued and captivated. I loved how the author started the story, connecting the history and the present of Voulhire in an intricate web. The world-building is the most crucial aspect in any fantasy. Matthew Tysz does this magnificently. The explanation, the characters, the places, the history and the present all combine beautifully to give us the masterpiece called We are Voulhire. Each town of Voulhire is expert in a specific skill, be it forgery, farming or politics. King Wilhelm rules over them. I liked the way the author introduced the cities of Voulhire at the start of the book. It was informational, subtle and in part with the narrative.

There are many characters in this book, all with their own personalities and characteristics. There aren’t there just to further the stories of the main characters and that’s what I truly liked about this book. There are also several point-of-views throughout the book. Galen, King Wilhelm, Midius, Lord Eldus and Meldorath are the characters who have their own point-of-views. I liked Chancellor Maido’s character. He had an in-depth personality and his evilness as plausible. His humor was a shining badge and brightened more as the story proceeded.

We are Voulhire contains themes of multiple dimensions, different worlds, supernatural and magical beings, magic, mystery, mayhem, friendship, humor, hope, death and violence, especially towards the end. It also has profanity and sexual themes in it. There is fatphobia in the book too. At the ceremony, Midius compares the wife of a lord to a bull.

There are many twists and turns throughout the book. You can never be too comfortable reading We are Voulhire. It is fast-paced, and for a Fantasy, it is short with just 150 pages. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because of the world-building, the extremely well-written plot and characters and the suspense. I couldn’t find any major grammatical errors, so the book is well edited. I recommend We are Voulhire to adults who like fantasy, adventure, magic and action. This book is definitely not suitable for young teens and kids because of its sexual language.
