Review by Tjbarn86 -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
We are Voulhire is a science fiction series by Matthew Tysz. It is set in a fantasy country called Vouhire that I'd term wonderful just as this second installment to the series is. Voulhire's top administration is held by the king but there are towns within the country led by Lords. Yamon Soul, Magnum Caelum, Hillport, Soulhire and Virko are some of these towns. In The Fires of Virko the spot is clearly on Virko, the most industrious of the towns. Meldorath, a once powerful mage who by wit and might had risen to Lordship but then fell when accused of practising ills and for long held captive on an island is back. That's where the first book places an end on and this one is earnest to set the series off even better. What has Meldorath in store? What is up with Voulhire newbie, Galen, and his blacksmithery journey? How does the series lead on?
The thing with Voulhire is it's not just a country so basic. There are three existential realms; the physical universe, the cosmos and the realm of magic that's ideally limitless, Caromentis. Science fiction is always bound to gear up the fences of reality but the magic in this series is what makes it just so solid of a ride. This time, compared to the first book, the action and adventure is rather plenty making it an abundant read. Economy, social life, demons, create a nice stir about the book. Death is rather rampant too. These elements surround the book setting up essence for a great read as it's just not plain. Change is also a gear that comes about as Virko is just set on relinquishing noble sovereignty to merchant rule. Change is in its wake. Quite a boost by the ailing Lord Venden who'd already made Virko so industrious.
With this being only the second book in the series, bringing forth more characters and thus more engagement and action perhaps beyond anticipation for a second read, made it quite just impossible to find a glitch or something I did not like. The low points were quite few and it's generally an awesome read.
What I truly liked about the book is its crafting of what I'd sure call a grand tale. The blending of different facets like religion, magic, interpersonal life, the common man's stride, administrative rule, all meshing in well and good bringing out a clarity filled picture, is worth the mention and something that's sure striking. I like that aspect of the book. One more thing that I took to about the book is its ability to well present different layers of happenings at the same time. Galen, Rowan and Demetrius are on to looking for iron while a whole different build up is on the round with character Meldorath.
With that, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It's length may be something to consider for they that enjoy long reads they can sit on, but really for the reasons I've mentioned and the tale and writing that's well deserving of being cherished this is quite awesome science fiction. I'd recommend it for young adults and even adults, lovers of fiction as a genre too. Dive into Voulhire, engage with the Voulhirians and see if this is not fit as splendor.
