We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz continues from where the events of the first book ends but this time, the focus is on a different place with some new characters. Virko is an industrious town known for its economic prosperity and having little interest in magic, science or religion. The book introduces Hans; the dark son of the town’s sovereign, who has plans of his own regarding the town’s future. We also learn more about Galen and his companions; and also about the Eiodi mentioned in the previous book. The actions of a freed demon, a dark son, a relentless priest and a powerful magician; all lead to an interesting climax in this book.

I feel this book, second in the series, showed just how much of a difference magic can make in promoting your personal agenda. Magic here serves as a tool; the more powerful you are, the less number of people you have to answer to as seen in the case of Meldorath. In different parts of the book, we could see magic being used by several people to further their own cause.

I like how engaging this book is, the parts I enjoyed most were the supernatural aspects of the book. You could see the creativity of the author shine in those parts, for instance; when the demons and Lord Dragan were talking, the author made the demon as an intelligent and cunning being, which is quite different from the traditional demon stereotype. The author was able to tap into the supernatural aspects of this book and run wild with his imagination to produce a compelling and intriguing book.

I disliked that even after reading this book which is the second in the series; I still don’t have a good idea of what the central plot of the whole story is. The book was written in a pattern quite similar to the first book where we’re introduced to characters and their actions but never really the reasons for those actions. It might get tiring to constantly be introduced to new characters without having really understood the old character’s motive. I would expect that in the next book, the readers can finally understand the motives behind some of the actions of the characters.

The book was professionally edited, I found little to no error. The book contains some swear words and violence so it’s not appropriate for young readers. I recommend this book to any adult reader with interest in the fantasy genre and a book set in a world similar to that of the movie series ‘Game of Thrones’.

Finally, I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars even though I’m yet to understand the central plot to the story. The book kept me interested and I wouldn’t mind recommending it to anyone.
