Review by Zainabreadsnow -- We are Voulhire: The Fires o...
We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second installment in the series called “We are Voulhire”. The first book introduced the character of Galen and we, as the readers, follow him to the land of Voulhire. We learned of the king of Voulhire; King Wilhelm Arcolo. In the first book, we also establish the different forces that take hold of Voulhire. This book, The Fires of Virko, dives into the city of Virko within Voulhire. Galen had started learning about the different metals and became an established blacksmith. One day, he is visited by the mayor and asked to lend his services to Virko. As an obedient and patriotic servant, Galen obliges.
In this novel, the conflict arises as the sovereign of Virko, Lord Venden, decides to convert the power system of the city to an industrial capitalist system. This would take away power from the nobility and hand it over to the merchants of the city. Once again, Matthew Tysz explores the social dynamics and issues of current-day politics through analogies of power systems within this fantasy land. This aspect of the novel is very well executed. As a reader, you will find yourself riddled with questions of morality.
As opposed to the first novel, this one contains a whole lot more action and plot. Galen, along with his friends Demetrius and Rowan are asked to go on a mission by Lord Venden. They are given the heavy task of eradicating a demon that lives within their vicinity. As they head out on this mission, they find out secrets about the Lord and his son which places them at the center of the change that the city of Virko is going through.
This book acts as a standalone novel. It can be read without reading the first book in the series. I would, however, advise you to read the first book as it does set up the dynamics of the land Voulhire in a manner that made reading this book even more intriguing. This book is professionally edited and I found no errors in it. I also did not find any aspect of the book that I did not like. Though there was a lot of gore and gruesome details, I found the book to be rather entertaining and a good read.
I would rate this incredible work 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to any fantasy lovers. It would be an interesting read for anyone who likes long series and getting invested in a whole new world.
