Review by Tan TR -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
In this sequel the characters that we came to know from the first book continue their adventures in the magical land of Voulhire. Galen, now a blacksmith, sets off with his friends to Virko, the wealthiest city in all the land. There they meet the young lord, Folcro, who is making plans with deadly consequences. Furthermore, we follow up on the struggle of King Wilhelm to find a decent heir to the throne and Lord Meldorath’s schemes to tighten his hold on Voulhire.
In We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko a lot of exciting things are happening. The different pieces on the board are making their moves. And the tension and excitement grow as you read through the pages. What is going to happen? When are the characters finally going to clash with each other?
The author, Matthew Tysz, is creating a new world. He must tediously sow in the ideas he has in his head into the story. Because it is a story with a lot of elements to it, there are some characters that haven’t even come together. There are storylines happening simultaneously or as a consequence to another character’s actions, yet they all play a part in the end. As a reader, it is exciting to see the strings and the decisions lead the characters to clash against each other.
But if there is one negative aspect worth mentioning, is how heavy with ideas some parts of the story are. The author is building the foundations of what magic does, how it is used, as well as the basis for the religion in Voulhire. This book feels like an important steppingstone into the inner workings of the world that is Voulhire, yet in doing so it is heavy on ideas and sometimes weak in the tension. But it is a necessary thing, for I feel that once knowing these ideas the tension will reach greater heights.
This story is filled with all sorts of tension, be that emotional or physical conflict. And it seems to pull you in from the very beginning. It is a story that captivates you in each chapter. And as you read this book, you realize that the series will just get better and better with each book. Therefore, taking everything into consideration I must give this book four out of four stars. I could not give it any less because it was professionally edited with only a few minor mistakes, it was well-written and holds the reader's attention all throughout. It is a magical series in the making.
All in all, this is a story for anyone that enjoys fantasy, loves adventure and dreams of magic. It is also for those that enjoyed the first book. I consider it apt for young adults and for an older audience as well.
