After Project Tau and Kalin Taylor (Project Kata) escape from the gripping clutches of GenTech, Kata plans to travel to his hometown, Trandellia, and start a new life with Tau. Unfortunately, it is not as easy as it sounds. After stopping at Sedna, Kata finds himself in some deep trouble with some very powerful people who want to use him for personal gain. Trouble seems to find Kata everywhere he goes, and Tau gets caught in the crossfire. According to GenTech, Kata stole their property, Project Tau, and the two have a line of enemies searching for them. Kata will stop at nothing to keep Tau safe. More torture and pain await them as they get separated from one another. What lengths will Kata go to in order to get back to his best friend? Will the aftereffects from being locked up, tortured, and dehumanized get in their way as they fight for freedom? What will happen to the projects if they get captured?

Homecoming, the second book in the Projects series that follows Project Tau, is an exceptional and exciting sci-fi novel that is created by the imaginative Jude Austin. It is unbelievable how vivid Austin’s imagination is, and how she is able to build a fascinating world that makes her readers think, “Wow, how did she come up with all of these planets and their customs?” It was like reading about a realistic world that has unique planets, creatures/animals, plants, people, foods, history, and cultures that are different than what I am familiar with. A few of the planets that Austin concocted include: Akkhen, Atthiras, Basarr, Trandellia, and Sedna. The second book was definitely better than the first book, revealing more information about past events, providing more factual information about the characters, and so on. It is highly recommended to read Project Tau before reading Homecoming, but the author gives enough information for this novel to be a standalone read.

The element that I like the most is the humor. Despite the tragedies, there are many humorous or sarcastic comments all throughout the story, most of them coming from Kalin (Kata), to ‘lighten’ the mood from all of the horror that is portrayed. An example of comedy is from chapter 11, which states, “Kata lay there, mind beginning to work again. So, to summarize: he was too weak to move, practically too weak to think, and the one person who could theoretically throw him a rope was someone who had no moral issues with sitting back and watching him drown. Must be Tuesday.” The last sentence, “Must be Tuesday”, really captures the sarcastic characteristic of Kata, which shows that regardless of the torture he has been through, he still exhibits the witty trait that he has had since the very beginning of the first book in the series.

There is not an element that I dislike the most. However, if I have to be nitpicky, I will state that there is too many non-borderline swearwords for my taste. After a while, the vulgarity flows, and I know what to expect. Furthermore, the profanity seems necessary for the plot. Nevertheless, there could be less use or no use of the GD curse word, as some readers may find it offensive.

In my opinion, the novel Homecoming deserves a score of 4 out of 4 stars because of the realistic characters, the uniqueness, the vivid descriptions, and the fast-paced action. Since I only found a few errors, the rating of a score of 2 or 3 stars is not necessary. The simplicity of words makes the novel easy to read and comprehensible. However, the author uses unfamiliar words that may increase the reader’s vocabulary, such as the word ‘niggling’ from chapter 11: “There was something about the man that was niggling at him.” Although I was impressed with Project Tau, the second book was more insightful, which makes it better than the first book. The novel contains profound scenes, which include adult language (borderline and non-borderline profanity), inhumane torture, intense violence, implicit rape and nudity, and perilous repercussions of prolonged maltreatment. Therefore, the recommended audience for this type of reading would be young adults and up. Individuals that get easily offended, repulsed, or distressed from inappropriate scenes may want to avoid this novel.
