We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the second instalment in an ongoing nine part series by Matthew Tysz. This book starts with us being introduced to Hans Hrelek, also known as Folcro. He is the son of Lord Venden, who singlehandedly industrialized and established Virko. Virko is a place run by efficiency for capitalism. Our main protagonist Galen Bray, along with his companions, visits this town for business purposes. The business is all but forgotten about when they come across something much more sinister and dark.

This book was surprisingly fast-paced compared to its previous counterpart. The plot moved swiftly and the new characters were developed with it. The world of this book expands even further then the physical and magical realm to include the possibility of a spiritual realm. The countless possibilities of different powers revealing their true potential is engaging. Nothing is impossible in this world, so far.

Faith, magic and King Wilhelm fight each other with subtle political moves, while vying for power over Virko. It is after all the most profitable town in Voulhire. Religion is fighting for a foothold in all of Voulhire; it’s influence declining rapidly. Their was engaging political power play going on throughout this story. The author is successful in painting a picture of Voulhire and slowly expanding on that universe.

The Land of the Princes was such a desolating place that our main character, Galen Bray, can’t even see the atrocities right in front of his eyes. Now it has become a game of waiting for the reader, for such a time, when Galen realizes the foothold of evil around him. As for Folcro, the reason for his atrocities is never made apparent. He is charming, cautious and cruel, and the readers are left to form their own conclusions or read on to find out more.

I would give this a 4 out of 4 star rating. This book is filled with relatable moral questions that make you think and observe. It is very well written and easy to read. The only gripe I have had so far with the series is the lack of any significant female characters.

This book contains various gruesome scenarios and implies a lot more. It explores uncomfortable topics like murder, homophobia, rape and torture. The story contains plenty of instances with explicit language and some sexual content is also hinted at. This book is not for young audiences. But if you are old and mature enough, this intriguing science fiction is the perfect book to transport you to a world of possibilities.
