Review by NerdyAsh677 -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of V...
The book We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko was written by Matthew Tysz. This is the second book of the series and we see a connection from the first one. This book includes the elements of science, magic, religion, and politics. It also includes demons and clergy battles.
Galen Bray is now approached by the Mayor for a favor to go to Virko and get iron for Magnum Caelum. Their journey was going well and Demetrius was born in Virko, he even met an old schoolmate Kayden Morgan who helped them in their journey. Things didn’t go as quickly as they wished because of the incident where they talked with the dying Lord Venden they found out a secret so deep that Demetrius had prioritized now taking care of such secret.
Yamon Soul’s Eiodi and seventeen heius priests gathered to discuss detecting magic in their world. This time they have detected Magic activity on Hillport during the attack of the Riva Rohavi and suspect that it was orchestrated by Meldorath. The Eiodi sent a squad to investigate Hillport.
The book didn’t show an immediate connection with the first book because the first few chapters were not connected to the Hillport incident. Later on, it showed a connection when the Mayor came to Galen for the favor of iron. The book did show two stories but unlike the first book, there is now a connection later on in the story. Here we see very big character development in Demetrius and Galen is still there supporting him. Demetrius’ behavior in this story was also based on his profession as a Monk. But, I could say that because of his desire to involve himself in the solution there was a consequence to his action. The Eiodi’s character here is someone whom I appreciate simply because he showed his leadership and considered even the commoners. He even chose to give time to children to talk to them and teach them that science, magic, and faith all go along. I liked that the Eiodi is approachable but serious in his duties including his duties.
The people of Virko presented themselves as some that are using political ways like tricks and illusions. Folcro or Hans’ character here is someone that I thought would be the main character simply because there were a lot of memories that he was presented. I just didn’t like that he was the one that is being concentrated in the book for us to see but his presence in the ending is not that much of given emphasis, only in the beginning and middle part of the story. I do appreciate the theme of politics here in Virko. Where the people are now pushing for change, but it’s more like the higher class. They even tried to attempt to remove religion in such a city. The setting is like a city that is industrious and has classes. You could imagine how much they wanted to be free from the Sovereignty of the king. It seems to me that the whole happening in Virko only took less than a week because it all coincides with the funeral. I do appreciate the author’s inclusion of Meldorath and how that one mysterious old man in the first book fit in the whole story and is revealed in the second book.
I would rate this book a 4 out of 4. The reason behind this is that I liked the book and that it has the evolving theme attempt to change. This time there was more development on the part of Demetrius instead of Galen here in this book. You could also see the introduction of the third universe. Though there are some errors it’s all right to just excuse such errors. We could relate to the story when it comes to politics and fights for control. I do recommend this to everyone but first, you must read the first book.
