We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko

By Matthew Tysz

This is the second installment of the series, and this is a wonderful book. This book is as dramatic and interesting as the first installment.

The story was a continuation of the first book. The main character in the story, Galen, went to Virko to secure a supply of iron as raw material for his trade. While in the city, he and his group stumbled upon a bound demon in Rendenhide, the house of the Lord of Virko. The city of Virko is a rich city and the standard of living is very high. The city is ruled by a noble, Lord Venden, but now the king wants the city to be under the royal administration. And a new ruler, Captain Meldus, was sent by the king to control the city and diminish the power of the nobles. While the city is changing power, some nobles were fighting back. The son of Lord Venden, Hans or Folcro, is trying to get control of the city. He found the bound demon in their house and he uses its power to control the city. The bound demon makes him his master against his will. Meanwhile, the monk had discovered how to unbound that demon. The monk wasted no time and he searched for the Hollenblaze that can unbind the demon. But, as the monk and the demon faced each other, the demon got loose and started to terrorize the city.

While the demon is terrorizing the city of Virko, Yamon Soul, was attacked by a powerful magician, Meldorath. He defeated the Eiodi, the leader of the priest, and banished him into the darkness. Meldorath had taken control of the city and had become their new leader.

As I read through the book, I sense the politics of our modern time. It is very intriguing to note that the author mixed political power with people of a “strange” personality. In our modern times, we often hear gay politicians and open society for gays. The author is very keen on depicting “slanted” society in his book.

This book, We are Voulhire: The Fire of Virko, by Matthew Tysz never fails to disappoint me. The more I read through the series the more I am interested in the other book of the same author. Again, I liked it when the author writes his book straight without a table of contents on it. I am very eager to grab hold of the next series. I am giving this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.
