In the second installment of the series, we follow the story of our hero Galen as he starts to settle in his new home. After escaping from the Lands of the Princes, he takes up residence in the town of Magnum Caelum in Voulhire, where he lives in his late uncle’s house. He finds his uncle’s diary that teaches one how to make swords in his forge. Fascinated, Galen starts to teach himself how to use the forge. But after an accident, the town faces a shortage of iron to use in the forges. By the request from the town mayor, Galen makes the journey to the thriving city called Virko to secure a reserve of iron.

Virko is a fast developing industrial city that was established by just one man, Lord Venden Hrelek. But now, he is bedridden because of illness and the city is on the verge of a rebellion. Galen, along with Rowan and Demetrius talks to him and he accepts their request of favor and asks for one in return. He believes his only son and heir has been possessed by dark powers and asks Demetrius, who is a monk, to perform an exorcism.

We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is action-packed, adventurous, and full of magic. It got me hooked from the very first page and I couldn’t keep from finishing the book in (almost) one sitting. This story touches many important aspects of capitalism and politics as well as magic and power. I loved the author’s story-telling and world-building. The characters are described so well with amazing simplicity that I could relate with them. The dialogues are witty and natural. In the midst of all the action and dilemma, the author still added funny quips in the conversations. That is what I loved the most in the book. Especially, the banter between Rowan and Demetrius is absolutely amazing.

The book is well-edited and fun to read. I didn’t find anything to dislike in the book. The flow of the story is perfectly balanced and so there was not a single point where I was bored or irritated. The story is told by different points of view in different chapters which helps us stay up to date as the story progresses. With all this to say, I will rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.

Any reader who likes fast-paced, witty stories, I’d recommend them to give this book a try. Fantasy and magic take an ultimate form in this series that should not be missed. The language is a bit harsh so I don’t recommend this for readers younger than 15-years old. Otherwise, this is a book worth reading.
