Review by SeasonalBuddy -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of...
We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second book in the We Are Voulhire series. This book is built around the operations of Virko, one of the most productive cities in Voulhire. As usual, there is an abundance of political play, magical interference, suspense, and tension. Galen Bray, Rowan, and Demetrius are headed to Virko to find a supplier of iron. That is how they end up at Virko's Lord Venden's place seeking his assistance. Meanwhile, the sinister Meldorath is still at it with his head games. Unlike before, he now has the upper hand with Hillport back in his control. He ups the ante again in his plan for revenge. Another twist is introduced with the abolition of the noble leadership, which breeds a new group of schemers, all of them intent on how to benefit from the new ruling.
This is yet another win for the author. His slow introductions are great for the readers to acclimate to their new environment. Even then, you can never be prepared enough for a serving from Tysz. Between the plot of the story and its timely unveiling, the unending mystery, the fully developed characters, and the author's word choice and narration, readers are in for a treat.
I loved everything about this book. The part I enjoyed most was watching Meldorath unleash his fury on the unsuspecting Voulhirians. His character remains as promising as ever. Unlike most villains, Meldorath is a long-term strategist. His actions are unhurried. He plans and executes his evil deeds within thought-out, set parameters. He is smart and always millions of steps ahead of his challengers. With him, I can anticipate the unusual.
As with the first book, this one also lacked chapters, which made navigating difficult. It is the only downside to the book. That said, it seems like a conscious decision on the author and/or editor's part. Either way, this did not impede my enjoyment of the book.
For these reasons, I award a rating of four out of four. The book was professionally edited since I only encountered one minor punctuation error.
I recommend it to lovers of fantasy books. This book is ideal for those who have read the previous book in the series. It contains a lot of characters who were introduced in the first book, which made getting into the flow of the story a lot easier. I expect it is going to get better still with every addition to the series.
