Review by Suesea -- The Demon of the Well
The Demon of the Well, by James B. Hendricks, is an epic poem that brings to life ancient wonders of the supernatural and mystical visions. The words the author carefully chose reveal, in glorious rhyme, the nature of humanity, cycles of life and death, as well as the ebb and flow of man's destruction and rebirth.
The poem begins with a warning; the tales are too complicated to tell. However, a young man persists. His curiosity is sparked by what appears to be a dark, sad tale lurking behind an old man's eyes. The old man is a trader working just outside the center of town. He carves many useful goods out of wood for a living. The young man ponders how he can get the old man to tell his tale as he watches the trader work.
Despite the warning, the young man continues to ask questions and finally hears the tale receiving more than the answers he desires. He is drawn into the story and becomes a major participant. The two travel into dangers and towards the demon of the well. They must outsmart the demon to save both their lives and the Earth.
This poem was professionally edited. I found no errors in it. There is no profanity or sexual scenes, but there are scenes of human violence and the trickery of demons and the dead. There was nothing I disliked about this poem other than it didn't last a long time. The images the author creates with his words keep the story moving at a fast pace and before you know it the tale is over. I could have kept reading this author for a much longer time.
What I liked most are the author's style and storytelling ability. The world he created in only 55 pages is immersive, beautiful, fascinating, and mysterious. I would recommend this book to young adults and adults. I'm not sure if the ghosts and demons would be appropriate for younger ages. This was an exceptionally well written and well-edited poem that I give 4 out of 4 stars.
