[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Wave Singers" by Echo Fox.]
I just finished reading Wave Singers (Equilibria) by Echo Fox. In it, we meet Merry and Leander. Merry has lived on her own for a very long time. All of her family members are dead or gone and she leans heavily on her best friend, Leander. Merry has plans to go to university on a singing scholarship. But one day, Leander convinces her to go exploring an old sunken ship. And from there, the game changes. Merry finds a strange locket. Eventually, Merry and Leander both end up in another realm entirely. A realm where mermaids or “Mer” live and Merry’s heritage comes to life. But there are many secrets and surprises. Is Leander who is says? Or is there something more sinister at work? And then there is Dylan, the Mer prince. Merry finds herself strongly attracted to Dylan. Whatever decisions she makes will affect more lives than she can imagine. And when she finally does make her choice, everything changes forever.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read, suitable for teens and preteens. The story resolved itself very well. I enjoyed the fact that it didn’t end on a cliffhanger, but did leave you wondering what was going to happen next. I felt that Merry had grown a great deal by the end of the book. The detail put into describing the mermaids and revealing their powers was exceptional. Mermaid stories always seem to be a ways out there as far as being credible, but this one pulled it off easily.
One thing that can be slightly confusing at first is that this book seemed to be written more with “Queen’s English”. Once that was realized though, things made much more sense. The second half of the book seemed more “American” in the wording.
I would have liked to learn a little more of the history with Merry’s family. I also thought that Dylan and Merry’s story was a little too easy. I would have liked to see more action as the drama was resolved rather quickly. But for the size of the book, it did a good job. I would love to hear more about Merry’s story. I will be looking for the second book in this series.
For any fans of mermaids or mythology, this series is great. It was a quick, but enjoyable read. I am giving this 4 out of 4 stars! Very well done!
