We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the second book in Matthew Tysz's epic Voulhire saga. The book continues right where the first one left off. Galen and his companions, Demetrius and Rowen, are traveling to Virko, the industrial capital of Voulhire, to scout out prospective iron deals for Galen's growing blacksmith business. They arrive during a monumental governmental change as the city is moving away from feudalism and more towards capitalism. During their stay, the trio discovers a dark, dangerous secret that an important lord is hiding from everyone. Will they be able to thwart the danger that threatens Virko and possibly all of Voulhire?

Miles away in Yamon Soul, a researcher finds a new virus and brings it to the Eiodi's attention. The Eiodi is the spiritual leader of Voulhire and thus monitors all use of magic within the realm. This new virus contains a magical component that baffles the Eiodi and his attendants. He vows to discover more about this new virus and make sure it isn't harming the people. His monks have also detected traces of a new kind of magic emanating from the village of Hillport. The Eiodi wonders if this has anything to do with Hillport's mysterious new lord. Will this unknown lord and magic cause trouble for the Eiodi in the future?

Tysz has written another fantastic novel, and I enjoyed every minute of reading it. He has done an excellent job continuing with the world and character building. His characters are wonderfully relatable and real. Since he didn't have to delve into the history of Voulhire as much, he was able to produce a book packed with action but still provided enough details to continue building his world. I love seeing his writing skills as they continue to progress!

I only had one issue with this book. The ellipses in the dialogue make the conversation feel stilted and throw off the flow of the text. This is a very small issue, though, and doesn't detract much from the story. However, if I could make one request, it would be for the author to add a female character. While I enjoy his characters immensely, there are no female characters that we get to know. The current females involved are only there to further the male characters' plot lines. I would love to see a strong female come on the scene.

Overall, Matthew Tysz has created a wonderfully detailed world and characters for us as readers to enjoy. His multiple plot lines make sense, are intriguing, and make me excited to read his future works. The story keeps you on your toes with its twists and turns. The book is also very well edited; I noticed very few errors or typos. Overall, I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this novel to people who enjoy good, fast-paced fantasy but might be intimidated by longer novels. I wouldn't recommend this book for young readers or people sensitive to the topics of violence and sexual assault.
