Review by Carol-Anne Trollip -- We are Voulhire: The Fir...
We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko. by Matthew Tysz.
We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second installment of this fantastical science fiction series. Epic as it's predecessor, this novel did not disappoint. Tysz did however step it up a notch or two by gifting Voulhire admirers even more magic and whimsical fantasy in The Fires of Virko. Brimming with intense excitement, this masterly crafted novel will enchant the reader with an elaborate world of fantasy beyond imagination. Exquisitely and artistically styled characters, both old and new, grace the pages of this novel. Characters so authentic that it is easy for the reader to establish relationships with them, be it good or bad.
Superbly detailed descriptions offered by Tysz once again allows the reader to visualize the tale through the mind's eye. The tale is presented in a beautiful flowing style which keeps the reader intrigued and curious. Ever so engaging this novel introduces fresh situations around every corner. Twists and turns so unexpected, it will leave the reader astonished. Unlike the first novel in this series, The Fires of Virko showcases very dark elements and a disturbingly grim plot.
In this novel the tale continues with main character Galen Bray. Required to go in search of metal and compelled to complete a task for the mayor, Galen and his companions Demetrius and Rowen head for Virko. Being the industrial epicenter of Voulhire, the city of Virko seems like the best choice. Arriving in Virko they discover that it is slowly being consumed by dark magic. If left to be, it could spread beyond the borders of Virko, spelling immense catastrophe. Within no time Galen and companions realize that nothing is as it seems in Virko. Not planning on staying longer than need be, they forego it and stay to do a number of unplanned things. These unplanned things includes fulfilling a promise Galen makes to a dying king in Virko and helping with a peculiar sort of exorcism. Galen and companions also cross paths with some awesome characters. One if these characters, Hans, just happens to be responsible for much of the harm and chaos being experienced in Virko. Hans is an extremely dark and tortured soul that will make the reader feel rather uncomfortable. Great difficulty awaits Galen and companions in performing their missions as they realize that there are much higher powers that be.
Tysz has kept his beautiful philosophical approach to writing this second novel as well as keeping his enchanting vocabulary readers found in the first novel. A bit eccentric and including strange words and phrases, this novel has been adequately edited. I found nothing to dislike about this novel and found it to be absolutely mesmerizing. In my opinion it is authentic science fiction at it's best.
I rate We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz an unapologetically 4 out of 4 stars. It was such a pleasurable and magical read that thrilled from start to finish. Tysz proves his brilliance as an author with an imagination that breaks all mundane barriers.
This novel will not only be an attractive read for Voulhire fans of the first novel. It will prove to be most impressive to science fiction devotees and to those who adore dark fairy tales as well. Due to the gruesome nature of this novel I suggest this novel to be read by adults only. I am now heading to rejoin the extraordinary world of Voulhire in the third installment, Someone Else's End. Do take time to check out the author's website for all kinds of info and the much appreciated list of the descriptions of strange words and phrases used in this series. www.matthewtysz.com.
