Matthew Tysz’s We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the second book of the series. It resumes where the previous book left off. So, if you haven’t read the first book, steer away from this review because there will be spoilers. Galen Bray, the refugee in Voulhire, wants to get some iron assignments from Virko to boost the revenue of Magnum Caelum. Virko is the industrial town of Voulhire, governed by the old Lord Venden. His asocial son, Hans or also known as Folcro by his close friends, is interacting with dark forces and has befriended a demon named Sod. Meanwhile, the Eiodi of Yamon Soul wants to know everything about the most powerful mage in the world – Meldorath. On the other hand, Meldorath wants to take over the church in Yamon Soul and fulfill his bigger plans of avenging his infamous betrayal.

Naïve and unaware of all these developments, the trio - Galen, Rowan, and Demetrius leave to Virko. For Galen, this could be a fresh beginning, as he is looking forward to settling in Voulhire. But, things take a turn when Lord Venden learns that Demetrius is a monk, and confesses to him. In return for the iron assignments, he assigns Dem an important task.

Galen’s survival skills, Dem’s powers, and their friendship are put to test. Will this trio be able to complete Lord Venden’s assignment? Also, Eiodi Gadesh learns about a benign virus. Can the Eiodi find out the properties of the virus before it’s too late? Who has taken over the ruins of Hillport? What is Meldorath planning? These were some questions whose answers I was patiently waiting for.

The first book acts as a good prequel to this book. While the previous book introduces us to the world of Caromentis, and gives us a vague idea of how powerful Meldorath is, this book has details on the demons of Virko, the magic of the mages, and the unimaginable power and wrath of Meldorath. The good forces and the bad forces are made crystal clear to the readers. There are a lot of twists and turns, the build-up is justified and when I reached the end, I just immediately wanted to start the third book. This is also what I liked about reading this fantasy – it gave me answers and left me with more questions.

I admired the growth of the characters in this book. Apart from being consistent with the prominent characters, i.e. the trio, Eiodi Gadesh, and Meldorath, additional characters have molded the shape of this thrilling story. There are Kayden and Peter, who have a long history with Folcro. We are given more details about Meldorath through his old mentor Alabaster. And most importantly, in this book too, the author’s creativity and storytelling shine through. Overall, it’s a good thrill. Sad endings seem to be the theme, but I am looking forward to reading what happens next. I would like to specifically mention that there is absolutely nothing that I disliked in this book.

Because of the aforementioned reasons, I would rate the book four out of four stars. Beware! Some scenes are grotesque and there is an explicit description of assault, violence, and war. It also has major profanity. It didn’t bother me, because I felt it was necessary. But I wouldn’t recommend it to minors and sensitive readers. This one too is for the fans of thriller, adventure, and fantasy. If you are new to the series, go ahead start binging! You can understand even if you start with this book. But, reading the first book will give you a solid foundation, and I hope you read the entire series.

So far, this is one of the best series I've read. But the cliffhangers after book #6 are painful :D.

I like how you said the second book answered some of your questions, but also introduced many other problems that need to be solved in the next book. It also requires a warning for those who dislike violence, great you pointed it out!
