Review by Samgum50 -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
The Fires of Virko is the second installment of the We Are Voulhire book series by Matthew Tysz. The events of this book mainly occur in the Voulhirian city of Virko. Virko is an industrial city built and founded by Lord Venden Hrelek. The story kicks off with King Wilhelm deciding to remove Lord Venden’s position as the sovereign Lord of Virko. A decision that does not sit well with some citizens of Virko. The mayor of Magnum Caelum visits Galen and informs him that Magnum Caelum lacks its iron reserves. Lord Eldus of Hillport was supposed to supply them iron in exchange for food.
However, after the gruesome death of Lord Eldus, his family, and half of Hillport, the iron was claimed by Virko. The mayor informs Gavin that he needs to go to Virko to ask Lord Venden to assist on the matter. Gavin, Rowan, and Demetrius set out to Virko. Lord Venden agrees to offer his assistance and asks Gavin to rid his house (Redenhide) of a demon that has been bound there. He also implores Gavin and his friends to rescue his son Hans (Folcro) from darkness. The mission ends up being more than what they expected, and things fail to go according to plan. Will they succeed and banish the demon? What will be the fate of Virko? You’ll have to read the book to find out.
I must say that this book was remarkable. What I liked most about this book was how unpredictable everything was. As I read, I had so many thoughts and ideas about how the story would turn out. However, nothing I thought of could match the direction the storyline took. The ending shocked me the most because of how dark it is.
I must say that this was brilliant thinking on the author’s part because it intensifies the readers’ interest in reading the next book in the series. I cannot wait to read on to know what will happen to Voulhire. Another thing I liked about this book was character development. I feel like both the new and recurring characters’ story arcs were expounded on wonderfully. I think what helped the most was the fact that the story is told from different characters perspectives.
Generally, I would give this book an overall rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The story did not disappoint. I feel like it was well developed and intriguing. One can tell that Matthew Tysz took his time setting up the plot. I enjoyed reading this book, and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I would say the book was well edited as I did not come across any errors whatsoever while reading.
The book does contain quite a bit of colorful language. There is also the use of dark humor and insinuative commentary and jokes. I would therefore say that this book is meant for a slightly more mature audience. This book would be best suitable for fans of science fiction. I would not recommend this book to readers who do not like science fiction.
