Review by Alyssa -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
“There is our physical universe, the Cosmos, and there is Caromentis, the magical universe. Both of these worlds, while colossal, lie at the mouth of a much larger vortex…”
We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second installment of the We are Voulhire series which will eventually consist of nine novels in total.
Continue to follow Galen Bray, the refuge from the land of the princes as he continues to navigate his comfortable new life in Magnum Caelum, Voulhire. His journey progresses with his new friends Rowan and Demetrius as they travel to Virko, “The heart of Voulhirian industry” where their trip takes an unexpected but nevertheless hair-raising turn that dumps them in a troublesome situation of dark secrets. The story presses on with the perspectives of both new and old characters alike. Enjoy the thoughts and struggles of King Wilhelm, Meldotath, Folcro (also known as Hans), Kayden Morgan, and the Eiodi.
What I liked most is how in this marvelously eerie land where magic, science and faith dominate, we get a more comprehensive view of not only its governing politics but also of its people, its magic and the struggle for power. As a bonus (as if we really need one here) the entire novel only consists of 158 pages, so a person can feel a little less guilty about ignoring all of their responsibilities as they devour the pages. It could be read as a standalone because it does refer to the first book occasionally but the reader would still have holes. There was nothing about this novel that I didn't enjoy or that I thought could use some more work as it is well thought out and has great depth.
I would recommend this book to anyone who had the pleasure of enjoying the first novel in this series but also anyone who enjoys discovering new fantasy worlds and the darker side of human nature. The story is comparable to the dark world of Game of Thrones with several things going on at once and not quite seeing how they all connect yet.
I would not recommend this book to anyone who is offended by profanity or who may be sensitive to the descriptions of brutality.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4 because it was engaging and there is a wonderful increase of intensity as the story unfolds that makes it difficult to put down. It also appears well edited as I only found a couple of mistakes so there’s nothing to do but to give it an excellent rating.
