We are Voulhire: The fires of Virko written by Matthew Tysz is the second installment to the WE ARE VOULHIRE series. In this second book, we are introduced to new characters who have influential roles in the management of Virko (the place where the book is mostly centered in). The Lord of Virko, Venden Hrelek is gravely ill and sets out to change the way Virko is to be managed after his passing by making it run entirely on merchant rule leaving his son, his successor, to only manage a small fraction of Virko. His son, Hans would still be a Lord but wouldn’t be as influential anymore.

Galen decides to visit Virko to talk Lord Venden into supplying him with iron since Hillport was no longer able to after Lord Eldus’ death. Galen embarks on his journey to a Virko yet again with Rowan and Demetrius, who is a native from Virko. Galen, Rowan and Demetrius make acquaintance with Lord Venden and a deal is drawn. However completing their end of the bargain seems to be very difficult as they encounter some dark forces that Demetrius unfortunately hasn’t dealt with before. The book continues with Galen, Rowan and Demetrius in Virko where they try to finish their quest.

I loved this book more than the first installment. I was now familiar with the characters since reading the first book, so it was quite easy to follow the storyline. Even though there was so much going on in the book, it wasn’t confusing since most events were happening in the same city. The book was engrossing. I just couldn't for the life of me, stop turning it’s pages. I liked how the book had short chapters, I could trick myself into saying I’d read just one more chapter and end up reading a couple more than what I had intended.

My favorite part about this book was that it was action packed but also had a fair amount of humor between the characters, so I got to laugh here and there. Rowan’s humor was still as inappropriate as ever but nonetheless very entertaining. One of my favorite quotes by him from the book was when he said "You can grind rice but you can’t move furniture? What are you, a scullery maid?", to Demetrius after Demetrius revealed the limitations of his power when he couldn’t perform a certain task. His interactions with Demetrius were my favorite still as they were always being smart with each other with Galen being the one to always try to maintain the peace between them. They did seem like they were warming up to one another in this book. I also got to know more about Demetrius and his personality. He isn’t as reserved as I thought he was in the first book. He is a lovable character that’s passionate about helping others. He is also a very sarcastic person and it showed with the conversations he had with Rowan.

This book however was much darker than the first one and I did get frightened by some of the scenes and just how graphic they were. It also focused on the dark side of magic and how it can be used to destroy lives. There is quite a great deal of scenes with blood and gore so I would recommend it to more mature audiences and people who do not mind reading about the mentioned themes. The book ends with a cliffhanger leaving the reader looking forward to the next installment of the series. I give this book a 4 out of 4!. It was simply brilliant and well written.
