Review by Mirajane_7618 -- The Decision
4 out of 4
I gave this book a rating of 4 because I really enjoyed the style of writing and though I personally felt the finale was aggravating it also added to the appeal of the book.
The Decision by Michael D. Komeshak is a novel that follows the odd events that take place after a UFO appears one morning. When human-looking aliens show up on Earth and demand an audience with a hand picked group of 13 people, the government has to comply- especially since the aliens have shown them a display of power that they can't risk opposing. As one of the 13, Jason Harper goes to an island in Hawaii to attend a series of conferences over a three day period confused about why he is chosen.
Soon he learns that these are not the aliens he has seen in movies but instead it is up to him and the others to decide their intentions. The group of 13 must each day hold a debate to determine the biggest problems to the earth and the people living in it. The aliens have claimed to help them overcome these issues but with conditions. Is it really worth it? Can 13 people really decide the fate of the earth? Will the aliens uphold their promises? Can such issues be resolved with a wave of the hand? Most importantly, is it morally right to play such games with other people's lives at stake? A book that will leave you hungry for more, this is truly a one of a kind thriller.
I would recommend this book to everyone for it really brings out a side of humanity that needs more examining. Talking about what's wrong with the world in the most blunt manner, it also shows different reactions to the same situations. A twist on the traditional 'its the end of the world' plot, it scrutinizes the moral values of us as people while also keeping a twisted sense of humor due to its straightforwardness. I would not recommend this book though, to people who prefer conclusive happy endings.
A well edited book, I liked the fact that it showcased several viewpoints with valid reasoning to each. The book was easy to keep up with and yet it felt as if it all was happening very fast. Each event in the book had a rhyme and reason to it but I felt as though a lot of the build ups did not get the punchline that they deserved. Some points in the plot were rushed and some were discussed too much but overall it did a good job of moving the plot along.
All in all, I feel that, despite the cliffhanger ending, this book should be read by all. It keeps you on your toes and wanting more.
