[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]

[rwc=id373763-125]4 out of 4 stars.[/rwc]We are Voulhire: a new arrival under great skies by Matthew Tysz is an incredibly well-written fantasy novel. It is the first book from Tysz’s “We Are Voulhire” series and works as an introduction for the 8 books to follow and the world they are located in. There is a map at the beginning and a glossary at the end of the book, that will help you keep oriented during this fascinating journey. As it says in the book: “In this special kingdom, where all the tools are provided to build a perfect world, you will stand as a firsthand witness to what people do when they have no excuse to fail. This, my children, is the magnificent and terrifying kingdom of Voulhire!”

This book brings us on an adventure through the land of Voulhire, a land that just entered a golden era, but hides many dark secrets. It is a place where science, magic, and faith walk hand in hand, often cooperating, sometimes colliding. A nation where dancing is used to gain power, to celebrate, to focus. Even though the character of Galen - a traveler from the Land of the Princes - can be considered the protagonist of the overarching story, the book’s perspective keeps changing between him, king Wilhelm, Lord Eldus and his family, and other characters. This also gives us a chance to see through their eyes the different parts of Voulhire.

The way that the author has to describe the land he walks us through and present his characters is what I liked the most about We are Voulhire: a new arrival under great skies. You feel like you’re brought in the book and walk along with them. During the fighting scenes I felt scared and suffered with the characters. You’ll be on the edge of your seat. The only negative aspect is the fact that being the first book of a series, it leaves you wanting for more. That is, though, the whole point of a series, so you can’t really hold it against it.

As much as We are Voulhire: a new arrival under great skies might be classified as Young-Adult fiction, and it does fit the profile, I think all ages can appreciate Matthew Tysz’s novel. It’s not only a fantasy book, there is also the subtle psychological view on a world that should be perfect and still has his problems and secrets. Kids and teens can enjoy the magic and adventure, and the adults can understand better the undertext. I think anyone between 10 and over can like this book.

I rate We are Voulhire: a new arrival under great skies 4 out of 4 stars, because it’s professionally edited, for how vividly the characters and locations are described, for the intriguing adventures all around, and simply because it’s a well written and enjoyable book.
